Start with your players’ association or union, then compare several advisers rather than hiring the first person recommended to you. Verify each candidate’s credentials, regulatory status, background, fees, and the people who will actually handle your account. For NFL players, the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) offers individual and institutional adviser-program routes—but a listing is a screening resource, not an endorsement or guarantee.
Start with your players’ association
Ask your sport’s players’ association or union whether it currently offers a financial-adviser directory, referral or matching service, or financial-education program. Confirm who can use it and how to access it; programs and eligibility differ, and NFLPA rules should not be assumed to apply to other sports or countries.
NFL players: check both NFLPA program routes
The NFLPA describes an individual registered-adviser program and an institutional program. The institutional route provides a point of contact to help identify an adviser or team; individual advisers are screened against program standards. Access to the registered-adviser list is limited to active and former players and certified contract advisers, while prospective players can request information. Confirm current access directly with the NFLPA financial-adviser program and its registered-adviser-list FAQ.
The NFLPA says the initial application period for its 2027 individual program has ended and directs applicants to check back for the next cycle. Its current application criteria include a bachelor’s degree, CFP and/or CFA designation, at least eight years of licensed experience, specified fidelity bonding and professional-liability coverage, and standards concerning fraud-related history, pending customer complaints or litigation, and custody of player funds. These are criteria for that NFLPA program, not universal requirements for every adviser.

Build a shortlist and interview several candidates
Use association resources as one way to identify candidates, then compare several advisers. The NFLPA recommends interviewing multiple people and assessing their background, experience, qualifications, client base, and fees. Its interview guidance is a useful starting point for NFL players.
Ask how much of the adviser’s work involves professional athletes and what services the adviser personally provides. Experience with athletes can be relevant, but it does not by itself establish that someone is qualified, a good fit, or acting in your interests. Ask for examples of how the candidate would address your own planning needs rather than relying on a general claim of expertise.

Find out who will do the work
Ask whether the adviser works alone or with a team, who will make recommendations, and who will handle day-to-day service. If the team uses attorneys, tax specialists, insurance professionals, or other outside providers, get their names, roles, and credentials. Check each person who may advise you or handle your money—not only the person who made the introduction.
Verify credentials, registrations, and background
Ask each candidate for their exact legal and professional status, the services covered by each license or designation, and their current registrations. A title or credential alone does not tell you what services someone is authorized to provide. The NFLPA’s regulations distinguish among broker-dealers, investment advisers, insurance professionals, and attorneys or accountants; their permissible scope in the program can differ. Verify the candidate’s status through the relevant regulator’s official records for their role and jurisdiction.

Ask about regulatory actions, customer complaints, litigation, bankruptcies, and disciplinary events. Check current standing and references, and review the backgrounds of named team members as well. An NFLPA program listing does not replace these checks: the regulations expressly disclaim NFLPA endorsement and say the association makes no representation about an adviser’s skill, honesty, or competence.
Compare fees, services, and safeguards in writing
Request a written explanation of every fee in dollars and percentages, how it is calculated, who receives it, and what services are included. Ask whether the adviser, firm, or an affiliate can receive commissions, referral fees, or other compensation from products or third parties. Find out how often you will receive reports and how the agreement can be ended.

For registered NFLPA advisers, program rules require a written client agreement describing services and fees, itemized statements at least quarterly, and written advance disclosure of certain referral compensation; the rules also prohibit specified conflicts. Ask how those requirements apply to the proposed relationship and request the relevant terms in your agreement.
Clarify who will hold your assets and what authority the adviser would have to trade or move money. Do not treat paying an adviser personally as a substitute for using an appropriately qualified custodian. NFLPA rules prohibit registered advisers from having custody of player funds unless they are a qualified custodian. Ask what account controls and statements you will have, and which transactions require your approval.

Ask whether the plan fits an athlete’s finances
A useful planning discussion should address your actual earnings pattern, obligations, goals, and career circumstances—not just a proposed investment portfolio. Ask how the adviser will assess:
- Cash flow, liquidity needs, assets, and liabilities, including how the plan would handle irregular career earnings.
- Diversification, investment objectives, risk tolerance, and your financial experience.
- Tax planning, estate planning, insurance, and retirement needs.
- Benefits relevant to your sport and the way those benefits fit with your other financial plans.
- How investment risks and performance will be reported, including the benchmarks and time periods used.
NFLPA program rules require registered advisers to make suitability inquiries covering assets and liquidity, liabilities, diversification, risk tolerance, objectives, financial sophistication, and relevant tax, estate, insurance, and retirement matters. They prohibit investment guarantees and require accurate communication of terms and potential risks. Under the program rules, a registered adviser acknowledges fiduciary duties to player-clients. Ask the adviser to explain in writing how those duties apply to the services and investments being proposed.
Questions to take to an adviser interview
- How many current or former professional athletes do you advise, and what services do you personally provide them?
- What licenses and professional designations do you hold, and where can I verify your current status?
- Have you or your firm had regulatory actions, customer complaints, litigation, bankruptcies, or disciplinary events I should know about?
- Who will make recommendations and handle day-to-day service? Can I meet each team member and check their credentials?
- How do you charge? Can you, your firm, or an affiliate receive commissions, referral fees, or other third-party payments?
- What services and fees will the written agreement cover, and how can I terminate the relationship?
- Who will hold my assets, what authority will you have to trade or move money, and which decisions require my approval?
- How will your plan account for my earnings, liquidity needs, liabilities, taxes, insurance, estate planning, retirement, and benefits relevant to my sport?
- How will you report investment risks and performance, and which benchmarks and time periods will you use?
- How do you document recommendations and disclose conflicts?
