In either case, check the player limit and controller setup for the specific sport—not just the game’s overall player rating.

The player ranges are Nintendo’s overall product listings, not a guarantee that every sport or mode supports four local players. Consult the relevant sport’s setup and mode before planning a group session. Nintendo Switch Sports product information and Nintendo’s Wii Sports listing give the headline specifications.
What sports can you play together?
Wii Sports: five original events
The original Wii Sports includes Tennis, Baseball, Golf, Bowling and Boxing. Nintendo UK’s listing names these five sports and gives the game an overall 1–4-player range. It is the relevant comparison here—not Wii Sports Resort or Wii Sports Club. The UK listing dates the game to 8 December 2006. Nintendo UK: Wii Sports
Nintendo Switch Sports: eight sports in the current listing
The current Nintendo product page lists Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, Chambara, Golf and Basketball. That is more variety than the original Wii collection, but the roster did not arrive all at once: Switch Sports launched on 29 April 2022 with Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara. Golf was added later as a free update on 29 November 2022; Nintendo said that update included 21 holes from the Wii Sports series. How many people can play locally?
Nintendo lists both games for 1–4 players overall, and lists Switch Sports as supporting 1–4 players on a single system. Those figures are useful starting points, but do not establish the limit for every individual sport, mode or controller arrangement. Verify the planned event’s local-player support rather than assuming a four-person group can join every activity at once.
Bowling is the clearest specific distinction in Nintendo’s Switch Sports information: all players can bowl simultaneously. That makes it a strong option if your group wants to avoid waiting through other players’ turns. Do not generalize that feature to the rest of the sports; actual simultaneous player counts depend on sport.

Wii Sports requires Wii hardware
You need a Wii and Wii Remotes to play Wii Sports. Boxing additionally uses a Nunchuk with the Wii Remote. A copy of the game alone is not enough if your group does not have the console and required controllers available. Nintendo UK: Wii Sports system and controls

Switch Sports requires a compatible controller setup
Switch Sports uses Joy-Con, but Nintendo says the controller requirement varies by sport: supported arrangements include paired Joy-Con, a single Joy-Con, or Joy-Con plus a Leg Strap. The Leg Strap is relevant to supported Soccer play, not a general requirement for the whole game. Switch Sports does not support handheld mode. Nintendo lists TV and tabletop play as supported, while noting that compatibility and play experience vary on Switch Lite. Make the choice based on your setup and group
- Choose Wii Sports if you already have a Wii, Wii Remotes and a group interested in Tennis, Baseball, Golf, Bowling or Boxing.
- Choose Nintendo Switch Sports if your group already has a Switch and wants the broader current collection, particularly if simultaneous Bowling matters.
- Check before inviting a full group: confirm that the specific sport and mode support your intended local player count, then count the compatible controllers you have.
- Compare what you already own first: the console and controllers are essential parts of the setup. Extra Joy-Con or a Leg Strap matter only if your available controllers or chosen Soccer controls call for them.
