Start with what your players actually do well—not a fixed formula or a kill-chart ranking—and assign roles for each map and side. There is no proven five-player role combination that guarantees success; treat role labels as a framework to test in scrims.
What makes CS2 roles complementary?
A role is a responsibility in a round, not a scoreboard label. The entry player may create space without topping the scoreboard; the support player may make that opening possible with a flash or trade. The useful question is whether each player’s decisions help the team execute and win rounds.
ESL’s August 2023 role guide describes five familiar roles—IGL, entry fragger, AWPer, support, and lurker—and recommends understanding, practicing, and communicating those responsibilities. A 2025 CS2 role-classification article by Yurii Kuzhii and Yuriy Furgala finds distinct behavioral profiles rather than one universal player type. Neither source establishes an ideal lineup or a guaranteed win-rate improvement. ESL’s role guide · 2025 CS2 role-classification article
What roles should a team cover?
These are useful primary responsibilities, not rigid identities. A player may flex when a map, side, or strategy calls for it, provided the team knows who owns each task in that round.

In-game leader (IGL)
The IGL communicates the plan, reads what is happening, and adapts calls as the round changes. Review whether calls arrive clearly and in time for teammates to act—not simply whether the planned execute succeeds. ESL’s advice is direct: “Communicate with your team about your plans and strategies.”
Entry or opener
The entry takes first contact to create space or information for the team. Judge the attempt by what follows: did teammates trade the fight, gain control, or use the opening? Survival and kill count alone do not capture the value of an entry.

Support or flex
Support players enable teammates with utility and timely follow-up, while a flex player can fill gaps when the plan requires it. Review whether flashes, smokes, and trades helped the intended play. The CS2 classification study also treats utility as a behavior relevant to role assessment.
AWPer
The AWPer specializes in sniper engagements and positioning. Consider whether the player and team can use the weapon to influence important space; a lineup does not have to revolve around a star AWPer.

Lurker
A lurker uses independent positioning, patience, and timing to gather information or pressure parts of the map away from the main group. The key is connection to the round plan: pressure that comes too early or too late may not help the team’s execute.
Anchor on the CT side
An anchor holds a defensive position and helps preserve the team’s structure. Assign who is responsible for each site or position and who rotates when information arrives. The University of Victoria’s CS:GO role analysis describes anchoring as part of defensive structure; apply it as a side- and map-specific responsibility, not a permanent identity.

How to build the lineup around your players
- Identify demonstrated strengths. Decide who makes clear calls under pressure, who is willing to take first contact, who supports or trades that contact, who can make good use of the AWP, and who can work independently to gather information or apply pressure.
- Assign primary responsibilities. Give each player a default job and define what a useful contribution looks like for that job. Keep flexibility available, but avoid leaving two players assuming the other owns a key task.
- Map the handoffs. For each map and side, specify the entry’s target, who flashes or trades, when the lurker reconnects or pressures, where the AWPer can influence space, and who anchors each defensive position. Make the IGL’s calls actionable for the players executing them.
- Practice a small set of plans. Repeat map-specific sequences and communication patterns so players can learn shared timings. Changing everyone’s job from round to round makes it harder to tell whether a plan or its execution needs work.
- Review rounds by outcome and behavior. Ask whether an opening created useful space, whether the team traded, whether utility enabled the play, whether communication was timely, and whether the defense maintained coverage. Use kills as context, not as the sole measure.
- Adjust when patterns persist. If scrims repeatedly show that a role does not fit a player or leaves a task uncovered, revise the assignment while preserving enough continuity to learn calls and timings.
How to tell whether a role is working
Use behavioral signals as prompts for review, not as a universal ranking system or target. The 2025 CS2 study discusses attributes including entrying, trading, opening, clutching, sniping, and utility, and reports role regions that do not collapse into a single numerical index. Pair those observations with round outcomes and the team’s plan.
- IGL: Were calls clear, timely, and executable?
- Entry: Did first contact create space, information, or a trade opportunity?
- Support: Did utility or a follow-up trade help the intended play?
- AWPer: Did positioning let the player affect relevant space?
- Lurker: Did independent pressure connect with the main group’s timing?
- Anchor and rotators: Did the defense keep positions covered and rotate on useful information?
Why role continuity matters—and what the evidence cannot prove
Changing roles can be necessary, but frequent changes make it harder to build shared timings and calls. A 2022 study of professional CS:GO tournament data by Weiwei Zhang, Goran Muric, and Emilio Ferrara reported that individual and collective performance initially declined after team changes and gradually recovered. That historical finding is not a CS2-specific test, nor did it test role assignment as an intervention; it is context for allowing a lineup time to adjust, not a rule against changing roles.
