Which card fits your Nintendo 3DS model?

Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says SDXC and microSDXC cards “are not considered compatible.” For the simplest choice within the listed SDHC range, use a 32 GB SDHC card in an original model or a 32 GB microSDHC card in a New model.
What is the difference between SDHC and SDXC?
SDHC and SDXC are capacity standards, not just different labels for otherwise identical cards. The SD Association defines SDHC as more than 2 GB through 32 GB, using FAT32. SDXC covers more than 32 GB through 2 TB and uses exFAT, according to its capacity reference.
That distinction explains why an SDXC card is not the officially supported larger-capacity option for a 3DS: Nintendo’s listed compatibility range ends at 32 GB and excludes SDXC and microSDXC. Reformatting an SDXC card does not make it an officially supported card type; Nintendo’s guidance does not endorse that workaround.

How much 3DS storage do you need?
Nintendo says SD storage can hold system photos, music, and downloaded software other than DSiWare; the data a game can save to the card varies by title. Its storage-use page gives potential examples of up to 300 software titles, 180 sound files, 3,000 photos, and 3,000 music files. These are potential-use figures, not a guarantee that every card or collection will accommodate those counts.
If you are choosing between supported capacities, consider how much downloaded software and media you expect to store. A 32 GB SDHC or microSDHC card is at the upper end of Nintendo’s listed range; a smaller supported card may be sufficient if your collection is modest.

Check the card before buying
- Identify whether your system is an original model or a New model; the original systems listed above take full-size SD, while New systems listed above take microSD.
- For an original model, choose SDHC from 4 GB through 32 GB, or use a microSD or miniSD only with an SD adapter.
- For a New model, choose microSDHC from 4 GB through 32 GB.
- Avoid SDXC and microSDXC if you want a card Nintendo lists as compatible.
Card speed is not needed to answer the compatibility question: the Nintendo guidance cited here does not establish a 3DS-specific performance advantage for a particular speed class.
