The right card depends on your 3DS model: original Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS systems use a full-size SD card, while New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL and New Nintendo 2DS XL use microSD. For either family, Nintendo’s compatibility guidance supports SDHC or microSDHC cards up to 32 GB; it does not consider SDXC or microSDXC cards compatible.
Check which card your 3DS takes
Nintendo’s compatibility guidance separates the systems into two groups. Check the model name before buying: the card’s physical size matters just as much as its capacity.

These formats and capacities are from Nintendo’s SD card compatibility guidance. SDXC and microSDXC cards are not considered compatible, so a 64 GB card is not a supported plug-in upgrade under that guidance.
What card should you buy?
For an original-model 3DS, 3DS XL or 2DS, look for a 32 GB SDHC card. If you prefer a microSD card, make sure it is microSDHC and use it with a full-size SD adapter. For a New Nintendo 3DS-family system, look for a 32 GB microSDHC card. In either case, 32 GB is the maximum supported capacity stated by Nintendo—not a guarantee that every product bearing the right label will work.

Nintendo lists compatible card types, but does not guarantee every third-party card. Its UK support page for New Nintendo 3DS-family microSD cards gives examples of tested 16 GB and 32 GB SanDisk Extreme-family cards and an 8 GB Toshiba card. The page cautions that product specifications can change and performance is not guaranteed, so these are historical examples rather than a current product ranking or blanket endorsement.
Do you need a faster card?
The cited Nintendo guidance establishes card formats and capacities, but does not identify a winning speed class or show that a faster card improves gameplay. There is no evidence here to justify paying extra for speed on the assumption that it will make games run better. Choose by the correct card type, capacity and physical fit; current brand value and retail listings are not established by Nintendo’s compatibility pages.

How to move your data to a larger card
Nintendo’s migration instructions say to use a computer and copy every folder from the existing card to the replacement. Do not selectively copy only folders that look important.
- Turn off the console and remove the existing card.
- Insert the old card into a computer, using a card reader or adapter if needed.
- Copy every folder from the card to a location on the computer.
- Insert the replacement card into the computer and copy all of those folders onto it.
- Eject the card safely, then install it in the console.
Nintendo’s data-transfer instructions include 16 GB and 32 GB replacement-card examples. Use a supported card type for the console model, and remember that the original 3DS/3DS XL/2DS family needs a full-size SD card or a microSD-to-SD adapter.
