Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter leaving Vault 76, follow the opening quests through Pennington and Lacey to the Wayward, then continue into the Responders’ story around Flatwoods. Along the way, set up a modest C.A.M.P., scrap unwanted gear and junk, and try different perk cards rather than committing to a perfect build. Wastelanders, Steel Dawn and public Workshops can wait.
Start here after leaving Vault 76
Follow the Wayward route
Begin with the people and quests directly ahead instead of roaming the whole map in search of a better starting point. Bethesda’s “Wayward Souls” quest guide directs you to speak with Pennington, meet Lacey, and visit the Wayward. Handle the confrontation there and speak with Duchess afterward. Ask Lacey for a weapon if you need one; Bethesda notes she can provide a free weapon.
Continue into First Contact and Flatwoods
Next, follow “First Contact” to the Overseer’s C.A.M.P. and onward to Flatwoods. There, follow an Overseer log and register as a volunteer with the Responders. This gives you a clear early story route and a reason to visit nearby locations without turning your first hours into a map-wide scavenger hunt. See Bethesda’s “First Contact” quest guide.
Build a simple routine, not a perfect character
Make your C.A.M.P. useful
Think of your C.A.M.P. as a practical base for crafting and storage, not a project that has to be fully decorated or optimized. Build what helps you get started, then add to it as you find plans. Bethesda says C.A.M.P. construction plans can come from quests, events, vendors and other players. When you need particular crafting components, tag them in the Pip-Boy so the game can flag them while you scavenge. Bethesda’s newcomer guide covers C.A.M.P. basics, plans and component tagging.

Scrap before you stash
At a crafting station, use “Scrap All Junk” before storing materials in your Stash. Scrap unwanted weapons and armor at a workbench when learning their mods is more useful to you than keeping or selling them; Bethesda recommends scrapping gear to learn mods. Not every item is automatically junk, though: decide whether to scrap, sell or keep excess equipment based on what you need and how much space you have. See Bethesda’s beginner guide and beginner tips.
Experiment with SPECIAL and perk cards
Try perk cards that suit the weapons and tasks you are using now; your first choices do not have to define a permanent build. Bethesda’s June 10, 2021 newcomer guide says characters gain a SPECIAL attribute point each level through level 50. Punch Card Machines, which let you reset SPECIAL and perk selections, unlock at level 25. Bethesda identifies level 50 as the point when the highest-level perk cards and max-level gear become available, making it a natural time to specialize more deliberately. These are progression details from Bethesda’s 2021 guide, not a guarantee that every balance detail has remained unchanged; see its newcomer guide and guide to Punch Card Machines.

Use teams and player C.A.M.P.s only if convenient
Bethesda recommends joining a Public Team and using other players’ C.A.M.P.s as map travel points. Treat both as optional conveniences: you do not need to play socially or follow teammates to complete the opening route. Bethesda’s beginner tips describe these options; the cited advice does not establish a numerical team bonus.

Level-20 story branches
You do not need to abandon the opening route as soon as another story marker appears. The Wastelanders main story opens at level 20 in Sutton, while Steel Dawn starts at level 20 at Fort Atlas. Bethesda says prior Fallout 76 quest content is not required for Steel Dawn, so it is a separate branch rather than a prerequisite for finishing the early Responders route. See Bethesda’s Wastelanders quest information and Steel Dawn quest information.

Public Workshops as a permanent home
Workshops can offer building and resource opportunities, but they are public locations other players can contest. Contesting can initiate PvP within the Workshop build area, so do not treat a Workshop as a private replacement for your C.A.M.P. Bethesda’s newcomer guide explains the risk.
A specialized build on day one
There is little reason to delay play while trying to plan a final build. Use cards that help with what you are doing, learn the systems, and revisit your choices when you have more cards and access to a Punch Card Machine. Bethesda’s progression milestones are outlined above; its newcomer guide encourages experimentation at lower levels.
