New players can leave Vault 76 and follow the Wayward quest to learn the basics; returning players can check their quest log, equipment, and current season before picking up where they left off. Your early SPECIAL and Perk choices are adjustable, so there is no need to settle on a permanent build right away.
First steps after leaving Vault 76
- Meet Lacey and Isela. After you exit Vault 76, head down the steps and speak with them to begin “Wayward Souls.” Bethesda’s Welcome to Fallout 76 – A Newcomers Guide (June 10, 2021) presents this route as an introduction to core systems, including placing your first C.A.M.P.
- Follow the early Responders quests. When the route brings you to Morgantown Airport, search inside for the Small Backpack Plan. Bethesda’s guide says it can be crafted at an Armor Workbench and increases carrying capacity. This location guidance is from the 2021 guide, not a newly verified map check.
- Do not force a difficult quest. If enemies or objectives are overwhelming, explore The Forest for a while, then return after gaining a few levels. Bethesda’s newcomer guide recommends this as a normal way to make progress.
Learn the map without trying to clear it
Appalachia is divided into six regions: The Forest, Toxic Valley, Ash Heap, Savage Divide, The Mire, and Cranberry Bog. Start where the quests take you and explore at a comfortable pace. Discovering locations adds icons to your map, which you can use for fast travel in exchange for Caps.
Bethesda’s newcomer guide lists free fast travel to your C.A.M.P., teammates, Vault 76, Foundation, The Crater, and Fort Atlas. Public events also appear as map icons. You can preview an event’s objectives and requirements before joining, and its icon offers free fast travel.
Build your character gradually
Early SPECIAL and Perk choices are experiments, not a one-time commitment. Characters earn an attribute point each level until level 50 and earn Perk Cards as they progress. At level 25, Punch Card Machines become available, allowing you to reset SPECIAL and Perk selections. Bethesda’s Fallout 76 Player Progression Guide describes level 50 as a useful point to begin specializing around a preferred play style and weapon type.

Until then, try different weapons and cards as you find them. If a setup feels awkward, adjust it rather than assuming you have locked your character into the wrong build.
Keep supplies and equipment manageable
- Food and water: Use scavenged supplies or quest rewards. Cook raw food and boil water to reduce disease risk.
- Radiation and healing: Use RadAway to reduce radiation and Rad-X to increase radiation resistance when appropriate. Keep Stimpaks for healing.
- Crafting materials: Tag needed components in the Pip-Boy so relevant items are easier to identify while scavenging.
- Gear: Scrap unwanted weapons and armor at workbenches; Bethesda’s guide notes that scrapping can teach you modifications.
You do not need to master every crafting system before continuing the main route. Learn each one when a quest or a piece of equipment gives you a reason to use it.

Choose solo exploration or company
You can explore and complete much of your route alone, or join a team when you want company or assistance. Public events are short activities that can be attempted solo or with other players; the event preview helps you decide whether to take part. Bethesda’s Fallout 76 Player’s Guide – Become a Legend! (June 20, 2023) covers teams and other activities. Teaming up is an option, not a prerequisite for starting the game.
Returning to Fallout 76 in October 2026
Bethesda’s official game page, checked October 4, 2026, labels The Slasher the latest release and Season 26 the latest season. Bethesda describes The Slasher content as unfolding across Fall updates. Its June 2, 2026 Infestations update announcement calls the update free and says it added infestation encounters around the map, with new 4-Star Legendary weapons and armor mods among the rewards. Season details and notices can change, so check the live game announcements for current schedules and reward deadlines.

There is no universal order in which returning players need to tackle new content and older quests. Check your quest log to see what is active, inspect your inventory and current Perk setup, and use in-game notices to understand what is live. Your old build may or may not suit your present preferences; adjust it if needed.
What Legacy Seasons mean for older rewards
Bethesda’s Legacy Seasons FAQ describes an initial Legacy Season implementation in which tickets can be spent on the current season, a Legacy Season, or both. Bethesda says the legacy run is planned to last for the full length of the season, but the original seasonal game board itself is not claimable in the returning season. Bethesda plans rotations; that is not a guarantee of a fixed return date. Check the current in-game season information before deciding how to spend tickets.

Platform and optional membership
Bethesda lists Fallout 76 for Steam, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 on its official game page. Check the edition and platform compatibility before buying or reinstalling. Bethesda also lists Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra; availability and catalog terms can change.
Fallout 1st is optional, not a requirement for the opening quests. Bethesda’s 2023 player guide describes it as a monthly membership with features including a Survival Tent and Scrap Box, along with other season and private-world benefits. Check Bethesda’s current regional terms for up-to-date pricing and benefits.
