To keep Steam downloads from crowding out browsing, calls, streaming, or online play, open Steam > Settings > Downloads, turn on Limit Download Speed, and choose a cap. There is no one setting that fits every connection: adjust the limit while the other activity you care about is running.
How do I limit Steam download speed?
- In the Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Enable Limit Download Speed and choose a limit. Steam’s client-rate instructions explain that the setting controls how much bandwidth Steam can use for downloads and updates.
- Check the units shown in Steam before comparing the limit with your internet plan. Steam may show a rate in kilobytes or megabytes per second, while internet plans commonly use bits per second. A byte contains eight bits, so treating the two units as equivalent can set the cap much higher or lower than intended.
- Run the Steam download while using the other activity you want to protect. If that activity is still disrupted, lower the cap; if there is spare capacity and the download is taking too long, raise it. The right value depends on your connection and what else is using it.
Which Steam download control should you use?
Choose based on whether you want to change download speed, timing, scope, or whether downloads run during play.

How can I schedule updates or change one game’s settings?
Schedule automatic updates
In Steam > Settings > Downloads, use Only auto-update games between to set a local-time window for automatic updates. If a download is already queued, Steam’s Download Manager lets you manually reorder it.
Defer updates for one game
- Open the game’s Library page.
- Choose Manage > Properties > Updates.
- Choose Only update this game when I launch it to defer its updates until you start the game.
The same per-game settings include Always keep this game updated and High Priority, as well as an option concerning whether other updates download while a game is running. Steam notes that launching a game set to update on launch can trigger an update before play.

Can I download Steam games while playing?
By default, Steam pauses downloads when you launch a game so the game’s network activity gets priority. To allow downloads during play, open Steam > Settings > Downloads and enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay. If downloading affects game network performance, set a bandwidth limit. A low download rate does not necessarily mean your internet connection is saturated. Steam installations can require substantial CPU and disk activity, and Steam may reduce the reported download speed to match the client’s ability to process installation work. If other internet activity is working normally while Steam is slow, check disk and installation activity before raising or lowering the network cap.

For broader connection problems, Steam’s network and Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide suggests checking router settings and Wi-Fi conditions, including trying a less congested router channel or comparing available Wi-Fi bands where applicable. Those are diagnostics for network trouble, not prerequisites for using Steam’s built-in speed limit.
