PC game prices and PC hardware costs do not move in lockstep because they are set in different markets. Game prices reflect choices about a title’s perceived value, regional purchasing power and comparable entertainment; PC buyers respond to computer prices by delaying a purchase, changing specifications or considering refurbished equipment. Neither is a reliable proxy for the other, and the available evidence does not establish a direct causal link between them.
Why game prices and hardware costs follow different signals
A game publisher or developer sets a price for a digital product. Its pricing decision can account for the game’s value, comparable entertainment and customer expectations in each currency region. Hardware buyers, by contrast, decide whether a PC or component is worth buying at the price they encounter, and can change the timing or configuration of that purchase.
These are distinct decisions, not two sides of one pricing formula. A change in the price of a game does not, by itself, tell you whether graphics cards, memory, storage or complete PCs have become more expensive. Likewise, a hardware purchase decision does not establish how a publisher will price a game.
How regional PC game prices are set
Steamworks documentation describes three approaches to converting a game’s price across currencies: a straightforward exchange-rate conversion; a conversion based on purchasing power; and a multi-variable approach that also considers the expected cost of comparable entertainment goods. Developers can set prices independently for individual currencies. Steamworks puts it plainly: “Many developers choose to determine their own pricing in each currency, and that’s just fine.” Steamworks: Pricing

That flexibility means a game’s price in one country need not be a mechanical conversion of its price elsewhere. Regional economic conditions and local expectations matter, and individual publishers make the final choices. Discounts and lower-priced releases can also shape the average prices people see without implying that all games—or hardware—have become cheaper.
What UK spending figures show—and what they do not
Ukie’s May 2025 infographic, drawing on Omdia, reports that UK digital PC game software spending reached £647 million in 2024, down 1.8% year over year. It also notes that lower-priced hits including Palworld and Helldivers II affected average PC game prices. This is a time-specific UK market measure, not a global price trend and not evidence about PC hardware costs. Ukie: UK games market 2024

How PC buyers react to computer prices
Futurum Research’s March 2026 PC Buyers Survey asked 462 PC buyers about their responses to prices. The results describe stated intentions, not observed sales or a forecast of component prices.
| Survey response | Result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Would postpone a PC purchase rather than overpay | 77% | Reported intention among the 462 surveyed PC buyers. |
| Would consider certified refurbished hardware | 55% | Reported consideration, not a record of completed purchases. |
| Among respondents who would reduce specifications: named storage as their first sacrifice | 45% | Applies to the subgroup willing to reduce specifications. |
| Among respondents who would reduce specifications: named processor speed and RAM as their first sacrifice | 5% | Applies to the subgroup willing to reduce specifications. |
The pattern shows the kinds of trade-offs buyers say they might make: wait, choose a different specification or consider refurbished equipment. It does not show which component prices rose, why they changed, or whether any particular specification became more expensive. Futurum Research: PC Buyers Survey, March 2026

Why the Steam Hardware Survey is not a price tracker
Valve describes its Hardware & Software Survey as monthly, voluntary and anonymous. Its September 2026 page lists discrete graphics-card models and their shares among surveyed Steam customers. Those shares describe hardware used by participating players; they are not retail prices, component production costs or a measure of how PC hardware costs change over time. How to compare game prices and PC costs responsibly
- Compare game prices within a defined currency and region, and account for publisher-set regional pricing and discounts.
- Use market spending figures only for the geography and period they cover; the UK’s 2024 spending figure does not establish a global trend.
- Treat buyer-survey results as reported intentions, not completed purchases or a price forecast.
- Do not use the Steam Hardware Survey’s model shares as evidence of retail prices or component costs.
- Do not infer a direct relationship between game prices and GPU, RAM, storage or whole-PC costs from these measures.
