NBA training camp is the preseason preparation and evaluation period before opening night. Players report, practice and compete for roles; coaches and front offices assess the roster through camp and exhibition games. For the 2026–27 season, most camps opened September 29, preseason began October 3, and the regular season starts October 20. Some teams with preseason games outside North America began earlier.
When did NBA training camp start for 2026–27?
The NBA’s season calendar set September 29, 2026, as the league-wide opening date for training camps. Teams playing preseason games outside North America followed an earlier schedule. The NBA’s 2026–27 key dates and September 28 camp report set out this sequence:
- September 21: Earliest reporting date for players on teams with preseason games outside North America.
- September 22: Training camps opened for those teams.
- September 28: Earliest reporting date for other veteran players.
- September 29: Training camps opened for the remaining teams.
- October 3: Preseason games began.
- October 16: Preseason exhibitions ended, according to the NBA camp report.
- October 20: Regular-season games began.
These are dates for the 2026–27 season, not a fixed annual schedule. International preseason travel can move a team’s reporting and camp dates earlier.
What happens during NBA training camp?
Camp gives teams time to practice, establish routines and evaluate players before regular-season games count. Media Day typically comes first, with interviews and photo sessions; practices then lead into preseason exhibitions. Coaches use that period to work on preparation and roles, while players have chances to show how they fit alongside likely regular contributors. The NBA’s September 28 report covered the 2026 camp opening and Media Day: NBA camps set to open with Media Day in most cities Monday.

Preseason minutes and lineups can offer clues about who is being evaluated or tried in a particular role, but a short exhibition sample does not establish a regular-season rotation. A limited role or absence also does not, by itself, explain a player’s longer-term status; look for team-reported information rather than assuming a cause.
How many players can an NBA team have in training camp?
Camp rosters can be larger than the standard-contract group teams generally carry during the regular season. The NBA’s 2024–25 CBA 101 summary says teams generally need 14 or 15 players under standard NBA contracts in the regular season and may have up to 21 players under contract during the offseason and training camp. Separately, the G League’s affiliate-player explainer describes teams trimming as many as 20 camp invitees to 15 for opening night. Those figures describe different roster measures—players under contract versus camp invitees—and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Because contract rules can change, these technical limits should be checked against the rules in force for the relevant season.
When do NBA teams make roster cuts?
Teams make decisions as camp and preseason progress and must settle their opening-night rosters by the start of the regular season. The calendar identifies the season’s camp and game dates, but it does not set one universal cut day for every team. Follow official team and league transaction announcements through opening night to see who is waived, retained or moved to another roster arrangement.

What happens to players cut from training camp?
A waiver does not necessarily end a player’s connection to the organization, and it does not guarantee a place elsewhere. Depending on a player’s contract status and team decisions, possible outcomes include a G League affiliate opportunity, a Two-Way contract or a signing by another NBA team.
Affiliate player
The NBA G League says a team may designate up to four waived players as affiliate players. If a player signs a G League contract, the player is allocated to that team’s affiliate and remains available for any of the 30 NBA teams to sign. Affiliate status is not the same as a Two-Way contract. See the G League’s affiliate-player explainer and its overview of how rosters are built.

Two-Way contract
A Two-Way player has an NBA contract type distinct from a standard deal and an affiliate-player arrangement. The cited G League roster explainer and CBA summary describe Two-Way players as eligible to be active for up to 50 games with their NBA team. This is a rule-specific detail that should be verified against the applicable season’s CBA and roster rules.

What should fans watch during camp and preseason?
- New combinations and routines: Compare coaches’ stated priorities with the lineups, roles and approaches that appear in preseason play.
- Who gets opportunities: Note which players receive minutes and are tested alongside likely regular contributors, while treating small samples as early clues rather than firm rotation decisions.
- Roster competition: Track official transactions as teams move from larger camp groups toward opening night. When comparing players, consider contract type and guarantee status, role fit, team-reported availability, preseason opportunities and possible alternatives such as a Two-Way deal or affiliate assignment. Verify contract details from team announcements or reliable contract reporting; the general roster sources do not establish individual guarantees.
- Availability: Use team updates and coach comments to understand absences or workload limits. Without a team or league source, the cause of a player’s status is not established.
- Team-specific timing: International preseason travel can mean an earlier camp calendar, so check each team’s schedule rather than assuming every club began on the same day.
