On PC, install Witcher 3 visual mods only after checking that they support your game version, following the mod author’s instructions, and backing up your game files and saves. Choose one installation route, verify the destination, and add mods in small batches. Load order can decide which conflicting visual asset appears; Script Merger can help with some text conflicts, but it cannot combine competing textures or other non-text files.
Choose an installation route
CD PROJEKT RED documents three ways to get player mods: the in-game mod.io flow, Steam Workshop for Steam players, and manual installation using instructions supplied with mods on Nexus Mods. A manager such as Vortex offers a separate managed workflow. These are documented distribution and installation routes, not guarantees that every mod is safe or compatible. The publisher says community mod content is not reviewed by CD PROJEKT RED (official player page).

Pick a route you can keep track of. If you combine Workshop, manual files, and a manager, maintain a list of everything installed and make sure your load-order view accounts for each item.
Prepare the game and check the mod
Make a baseline and backup
Note your game version and platform or store, then copy your game files and saves before changing the installation. A community installation guide recommends both backups as a precaution against crashes or a damaged setup; a backup is not a guarantee that every problem can be reversed (community guide).

Read the author’s requirements
Before downloading, check the mod page for supported game versions, required dependencies, incompatibilities, installation steps, and any configuration or load-order notes. Mods intended for older game versions or a different edition can prevent startup or cause unintended behavior, according to the Vortex guide. Compatibility depends on the specific game build and mod combination; no single compatibility list establishes support for every visual mod.
Use the documented mod page or platform flow rather than a third-party rehost. If a host provides file-scanning information, it can be one check, not proof that a file is harmless. Popularity, comments, and a platform listing also do not amount to publisher review.

REDkit is not required to play mods
REDkit is primarily a tool for creating mods. CD PROJEKT RED’s FAQ says players need The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to play user-created mods, not REDkit (official FAQ).
Install and verify the files
For a manual install
- Open the mod’s installation instructions and identify the exact destination and any prerequisites.
- Extract or copy the files to that destination. The official documentation identifies the game’s
modsdirectory and says that mod folders beginning withmodare loaded; folders with a different prefix are ignored (REDkit documentation). - Check the resulting folder structure against the author’s directions. Do not add an extra nested folder or rename files unless the instructions say to.
- Start the game and check whether the mod is enabled and its intended visual change appears.
For Workshop or Vortex
Workshop subscriptions install under Steam’s Workshop directory rather than the ordinary game mods folder. With Vortex, check that the mod is installed, enabled, and deployed. Manually installed mods may not be tracked by Vortex, so do not assume its load-order list shows the complete setup (REDkit documentation; Vortex guide).

Set load order for visual conflicts
The official REDkit documentation says mods in the game mods directory are usually loaded alphabetically. It documents DocumentsThe Witcher 3mods.settings for enabling mods and specifying priority; lower-level priority values control when a mod loads (REDkit documentation). Where two mods conflict over the same files, the first-loaded mod wins, according to the Vortex guide.
For texture, mesh, lighting, or other asset replacements, priority selects which competing file takes effect; it does not blend the two edits. Follow the mod authors’ ordering and patch instructions. There is no universal best priority order because the correct choice depends on the mods and files involved.

Use Script Merger only for the conflicts it handles
Script Merger detects conflicts and helps produce merged versions of conflicting text files. Its documentation says it cannot merge non-text conflicts, so competing visual assets are handled by load order: one file overrides the other (Script Merger documentation).
Run the tool when its scan or the mod instructions call for it; a visual-only texture replacement does not need a script merge simply because it changes visuals. Review conflicts rather than automatically accepting every merge: the tool author warns that auto-merging can be incorrect and that script-logic conflicts can remain even when text changes merge. Rerun conflict checks after installing, removing, or updating relevant mods. The tool may detect changed inputs and prompt you to remove affected merges.

Test changes and isolate problems
- Add only a small batch of mods before testing.
- Launch the game and check that it starts, the expected visual change appears, and the affected area or menu remains usable.
- If a problem begins, disable or remove the most recent change and test again before adding anything else.
- If you update a mod that was included in a merge, rerun conflict checks because the merged inputs may have changed.
This incremental approach makes it easier to identify a likely cause; it does not guarantee that removing a mod will repair every installation.

- Script Merger reports conflicts: Use it for mergeable text changes. Review overlapping edits carefully; select load priority for non-text conflicts according to which visual asset you want.
- Workshop and manual mods behave unexpectedly together: Remember that their files live in different locations and that the publisher warns mixing the routes can cause unforeseen conflicts.
- You need to undo changes: Restore your clean backup if necessary. If removing merger output, remove generated merges according to Script Merger’s instructions.
