Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds supports cross-platform online play for up to 12 players. To race with friends in a custom lobby, choose Friend Match; Xbox’s store listing describes it as the mode for playing with friends in 12-player lobbies with custom rules. The only detailed official Lobby ID directions available here are for the 2025 Open Network Test, so retail menus may differ.
Which online mode should you use to play with friends?
Use Friend Match for a friends’ lobby with custom rules. Microsoft’s Xbox listing describes Friend Match as online play against friends in lobbies for up to 12 players with custom rules: Xbox’s Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds listing.
That is different from World Match, which SEGA describes as a 12-player race mode, alongside team-focused Festival events and Time Trial. World Match is the competitive mode; the Xbox listing identifies Friend Match as the friends’ custom-lobby option. SEGA’s September 25, 2025 launch announcement
Can you play with friends on other platforms?
Yes. SEGA confirms crossplay, so players on supported platforms can race online across platforms. The game is listed for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and Epic Games Store. SEGA lists up to 12 players online. This internet-play limit is separate from local play: SEGA lists 1–4 local players generally, and up to 8 players through local communication on the original Nintendo Switch version. How to join a lobby by Lobby ID
SEGA’s published Lobby ID sequence comes from the 2025 Open Network Test, not confirmed retail-version documentation. In that test, the host opened the Friend List and displayed the current Lobby ID; friends searched using that ID. SEGA’s Open Network Test instructions

- Open the Friend List in the test version.
- Display the current Lobby ID.
- Have your friends search for the lobby using that ID.
If the retail game’s menus do not match these directions, follow the current in-game prompts; the test instructions do not establish that the retail interface uses the same sequence.
