Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds supports local play for up to four players on PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series, and Switch 2. The original Nintendo Switch also supports local wireless play for up to eight players—but that is not eight players sharing one split-screen display. To race locally, choose a supported local mode such as Grand Prix or Race Park and follow the game’s on-screen prompts to add players; SEGA’s published guidance does not specify the exact menu path or controller-join sequence.
How many players can race locally on each platform?
SEGA lists local play for one to four players on PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series. Switch 2 also supports up to four players locally. On the original Nintendo Switch, the four-player local-play listing is separate from a local wireless option for up to eight players.

These are local-play limits, not online limits. SEGA lists online races for up to 12 players; that figure does not mean 12 people can play split-screen on one console. SEGA’s launch announcement describes crossplay as allowing players on multiple platforms to compete online, but does not establish that a local split-screen group can join an online race together.
How to start a local split-screen race
SEGA confirms that Grand Prix and Race Park can be played locally, but its published support pages do not document a step-by-step menu route or how additional controllers join. Use the game’s on-screen instructions rather than relying on a button sequence that may differ by platform or version.

- Connect and turn on the controllers you plan to use, up to the local player limit for your platform.
- In the game, select a locally available mode: Grand Prix or Race Park.
- Follow the prompts shown on screen to add players and proceed to the race.
If the game does not recognize another controller, check that it is connected to the console and follow the console’s own controller-pairing guidance. If it still will not join, consult SEGA support. The official sources do not specify game-specific pairing steps or account requirements.

What the original Switch’s eight-player option means
SEGA’s original Switch support listing distinguishes “Local Play: 1–4 players” from “Switch Local Play: Up to 8 players.” Its launch announcement clarifies that the Switch-specific eight-player option is local wireless play. Do not treat it as an eight-person split-screen race on one console; the supported single-system local-play limit listed for the original Switch is four.

SEGA advertises online play for up to 12 players and crossplay across platforms. Those features concern online competition. The published information does not confirm that several players sharing one console can enter an online match together, so do not assume local split-screen and online play can be combined.
