You can enjoy an online gaming friendship without being available all the time, sharing personal details, or tolerating behavior that makes you uncomfortable. Decide what you need, state it plainly, and use the game’s privacy and safety controls if someone ignores your limit. For young players, involve a trusted adult when contact feels upsetting or unsafe.
Choose what you want to set limits on
Before talking to a gaming friend, identify what is causing friction. A boundary is a clear limit on your availability, the subjects you discuss, how you communicate, what you share, or how you expect to be treated. The eSafety Commissioner advises young people to state boundaries clearly and explains that online friends should not send messages or share content that makes them feel uncomfortable or unsafe (online gaming guidance).
- Time and availability: When do you want to play, and when do you log off? Do you expect yourself to answer messages promptly, or can you reply when convenient?
- Communication: Are you comfortable with in-game text, voice chat, video, private messages, or moving to another app? You can choose different limits for each channel.
- Topics: Which subjects are off-limits? You do not have to discuss sexuality, sexual experiences, relationships, or anything else you would rather keep private.
- Privacy: Decide what you will not share, such as your real name, location, school, phone number, or accounts on other services.
- Treatment: Consider what behavior ends a session for you: insults, repeated pressure, unwanted sexual comments, threats, or other conduct you do not accept.
Privacy settings are part of this decision, not a substitute for it. Review who can contact you, see your activity, or join your games, and check your friends list. The eSafety Commissioner and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend using available privacy and communication controls; specific options vary by game and platform (eSafety guidance on unsafe contact; AAP guidance on multiplayer games).
Say the boundary clearly
A brief, direct message gives the other person a fair chance to understand what you want. You can be friendly without making the limit sound negotiable. These are suggested scripts, not quotations from the sources:

- “I like playing with you, but I’m logging off at 10. I won’t be available after that.”
- “I’m happy to talk about the game, but I don’t want to share my real name, location, or school.”
- “I don’t want to discuss that. Let’s switch topics.”
- “I’m not using voice chat tonight; I’ll message in the game.”
If the person asks why, you can give a short explanation, but you do not need to argue your case. A limit is about what you will do: “If the insults continue, I’m leaving the match.” That is more actionable than trying to make another player agree with your reasons.
Make the limit practical to follow
Set up your routine and account so your actions match the boundary. You might agree on a regular time to play, set an offline status, silence notifications during work or sleep, restrict messages to friends, or decide in advance when a session ends. Check the current settings and help pages for your particular game or platform; controls and labels differ.

There is no universal number of gaming hours that fits everyone. The eSafety Commissioner advises paying attention to whether gaming is crowding out sleep, school or work, relationships, or other activities, and suggests limits and screen-free time where needed (eSafety gaming and balance guidance). A useful limit is one you can keep alongside your responsibilities and wellbeing, rather than a number copied from someone else.
What to do when someone pushes past a boundary
Choose a response based on how serious the behavior is, whether the person respects a clear request, and whether it feels safe to respond. You do not owe someone another conversation if their conduct is threatening or makes you feel unsafe.

For a low-risk disagreement
If a friend forgets a time limit or makes a comment you dislike, you can restate the boundary once and end that session if it continues. For example: “I said I’m done for tonight. I’m logging off now.” Then follow through rather than staying in the argument.
For repeated pressure or unwanted contact
If someone keeps messaging, asks for personal information after you decline, or repeatedly ignores your limits, stop replying if that is the safest choice. Use the platform’s mute, block, and privacy controls. You can leave the conversation or game; you do not have to confront the person first. eSafety’s guidance on unsafe contact recommends steps such as limiting contact, blocking, keeping evidence, and seeking support (eSafety guidance).

For bullying, threats, or serious abuse
When it is safe, keep screenshots or recordings that show what happened, then report the account or conduct through the service. Save relevant details without continuing to engage. StopBullying.gov recommends blocking and reporting, taking a break from the game, and telling someone trusted (Cyberbullying and Online Gaming, reviewed November 29, 2024). If collecting evidence could increase risk or distress, prioritize getting away from the interaction and asking for help.

Notice what happens outside the game: Are you regularly losing sleep, missing school or work, neglecting relationships, or dropping activities that matter to you because it is hard to stop playing or answer friends? Those are reasons to adjust your schedule and make offline time easier to protect—not a diagnosis by themselves.

Try a planned log-off time, screen-free periods, or turning off notifications when you need to focus or sleep. If sticking to a plan is difficult, ask a friend or family member to help you keep it. The eSafety Commissioner recommends setting limits and seeking support when gaming is affecting other parts of life (online gaming guidance).
Extra support for younger players
If you are a child or teenager and a gaming interaction upsets you or becomes inappropriate, stop playing and tell a parent or another trusted adult. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission gives this advice specifically for children and families in its January 2025 Kids and Video Games guidance. An adult can help you review settings, block or report an account, and decide what to do next. Adults can use the same practical safety steps, while choosing someone they trust for support.
