Recommended Steam Deck settings for Owlboy
Controls: keep the default layout first
Use the built-in Deck controls with Owlboy’s default controller configuration. The game-specific compatibility record says it provides access to all functionality and that the game displays Steam Deck controller icons. No particular custom button mapping is established as necessary.
Graphics: leave the defaults in place
Start with the game’s default graphics configuration; the same compatibility record reports that it performs well. The available sources do not establish a required resolution, frame-rate cap, TDP setting, graphics preset, or battery profile, so there is no evidence-based custom optimization recipe to apply.
Valve’s Steam Deck Verified criteria include working well out of the box, supporting the Deck’s default resolution, using good default settings, and displaying legible text. Those general criteria reinforce starting at defaults; they do not specify Owlboy-specific tuning values.

Using a Bluetooth or USB controller
Owlboy’s Steam listing says SDL_GameController devices are fully supported. However, the Steam Deck compatibility record notes that the game may not automatically use an external controller as the active device.
- Connect the Bluetooth or USB controller to the Steam Deck.
- Open the Quick Access Menu and check the active controller selection.
- Select the external controller if Owlboy is still responding to the built-in Deck controls.
The practical difference is setup: the built-in controls are reported to work with the default configuration, while an external controller may need to be selected as the active device. The available evidence does not compare specific controller models or establish differences in latency or battery life.

Compatibility and troubleshooting
Do not force Proton as a first step
The game-specific record reports successful SteamOS operation and lists Owlboy’s recommended runtime as native. A compatibility override is therefore not presented as a required setting.
If a problem occurs
- For general system instability, check for available SteamOS updates and restart the Deck, as Steam Support’s troubleshooting guide advises.
- If Owlboy still has a compatibility problem, Steam Support documents trying a forced compatibility tool from the game’s Properties > Compatibility menu. Treat this as a troubleshooting fallback, not the default configuration for Owlboy.
What the Verified label establishes
SteamDB’s Owlboy configuration record lists the game as Verified and records May 6, 2022 as the compatibility test date. That is a dated record, not evidence of a fresh retest. Valve describes Verified games as working well on Deck right out of the box, with criteria covering controls, display, and default experience; check the game’s current Steam Store or Library page for the status shown now.
