Purified Hellfire doubles that reward, but Blizzard’s description does not specify a key count. These are PTR-era rules, not confirmed live-game drop rules for October 2026.
What does Essence of Hellfire reward?
In Blizzard Entertainment’s 2.5.0 PTR overview, surviving a World Boss encounter while Essence of Hellfire is slotted earns Lair Boss Keys. The overview describes Essence of Hellfire as earned by battling Azmodan in the Overworld. It does not give a fixed number of keys per encounter.
Azmodan is also described as a World Boss that can be summoned at altars south of Zarbinzet. The PTR overview does not state that the altar location changes the Essence of Hellfire reward.
How Purified and Corrupted Hellfire differ
| Essence of Hellfire state | Effect described in the 2.5.0 PTR overview |
|---|---|
| Purified | Doubles the Lair Boss Key reward for surviving World Boss encounters. The gift also gives direct damage a 10% chance to stun an enemy for 1 second. |
| Corrupted | Meteors rain down on the player during World Boss fights. The gift still grants its reward bonus. |
The 10% figure is the stated chance for the Purified gift’s stun effect; it is not a key drop rate. “Doubled” describes the reward bonus, but without a stated base quantity it cannot be converted into an exact key count.

What ranks change
The PTR overview says rank upgrades improve Lair Boss Key quality and identifies two distribution bonuses:
- Rank 2: The weekly cache awards a large amount of Lair Boss Keys.
- Rank 5: More keys drop across Sanctuary.
Blizzard does not state exact quantities for either rank bonus, or name the key tiers in the description. The source therefore supports the direction of the changes, but not a numerical drop table.

Do Hellfire World Bosses drop forge or salvage materials?
Forge materials are not listed as an Essence of Hellfire reward in the PTR overview. The same overview assigns Salvage Materials to a separate track: Essence of Screams, earned after completing the Kurast Undercity, with its rewards doubled while Purified. That activity and gift should not be confused with Hellfire’s World Boss key reward.
For the Hellfire reward specifically, the documented item is Lair Boss Keys. The cited description does not establish that World Bosses with Essence of Hellfire also award forge or salvage materials.

No current live-game confirmation is established by the cited source. Blizzard’s overview describes the 2.5.0 PTR, and the available description does not verify whether its reward, modifiers, rank effects, or key naming remain in the live game as of October 4, 2026. Treat the details above as PTR rules unless the current in-game Essence description or a live patch note confirms them.
