Some Limited Run Games releases have a stated copy cap; others are sold through a preorder open for a set time. The name alone does not tell you how many copies will be made or whether a particular release will sell out. Check the individual product page for a quantity limit, preorder deadline, and current availability before deciding whether to wait.
Are Limited Run Games releases actually limited?
There is no single cap that applies to every release. Limited Run says qualifying preorder products are manufactured to demand, with final manufacturing starting after the preorder period ends. That describes how those preorder editions are produced; it does not establish a fixed number of copies for every product. (Limited Run Games FAQ; Limited Run Games Support)
Some product pages do state a specific cap. The official page for Switch Limited Run #26, Another World, says the region-free physical cartridge is limited to 1,000 copies and marks it sold out. That is a concrete example, not a company-wide rule. (Another World product page)
Will a release sell out?
It can. A release with a stated copy limit can sell out when its available copies are gone. A timed preorder can close on its listed date, after which the original preorder may no longer be available. For example, the official PS5 page for I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream described an open preorder for a limited time ending December 7, 2025; the Switch 2 page for High On Life gave a March 1, 2026 closing date. The product page is the best guide to that particular release: check whether it gives a copy cap or a closing date, and whether it currently says available or sold out. The available evidence does not establish a universal sellout schedule, so the name or format alone cannot tell you how quickly a release will disappear.
Could it return after selling out?
Possibly, but do not count on it. In a February 5, 2025 announcement, Limited Run said it orders extra units to cover damage and replacements, convention stock, and manufacturing minimums. Once production is complete, some leftovers may be offered through its rotating Vault if enough remain. The company cautions that Vault stock can be very limited and sell out quickly. How to decide whether to buy now or wait
- Look for the edition’s stated limit. If the product page gives a copy cap, use that figure for that release only; do not assume it applies to other Limited Run products.
- Check the preorder deadline. A timed preorder can close on its listed date. Confirm the date and any stated time on the live listing rather than relying on an older example.
- Check current status. Product availability changes. A sold-out listing is different from an open preorder, and neither status predicts whether surplus will appear later.
- Treat the Vault as a possible second chance, not a restock promise. Limited Run says some surplus may be offered there, but availability and quantity are uncertain.
Does the production wait mean the preorder stays open?
No. The purchase window and the manufacturing timeline are separate. Limited Run Support gives general estimates of shipping within four months for standard editions and up to ten months for collector editions, depending on complexity. Its order-status tracker follows stages including design, sampling and approval, production, final assembly, and manufacturing complete. These estimates concern fulfillment after ordering; they do not say how long a preorder remains available. (Limited Run Games Support; Limited Run Games order status tracker)
