For most PS2 owners who want to run homebrew, start by checking the console’s exact model and boot ROM, then choose a software boot method that supports it. FreeMcBoot (FMCB) avoids soldering and is removable, but it will not boot autonomously on every late Slim. A modchip is a soldered hardware change best reserved for owners who need a specific chip feature and have expert soldering skills. Open PS2 Loader (OPL) and the storage device you use are separate choices from how homebrew starts.
What should you check before choosing a method?
Check the full model number on the console and, where possible, the boot ROM version in uLaunchELF. The FreeMcBoot FAQ says some late SCPH-90000 Slim consoles manufactured from 2008 Q3 (date code 8C) are incompatible with autonomous FMCB boot, but date code and chassis alone do not settle every case. Sony’s boot ROM 2.30 update blocked the system-update mechanism FMCB relies on in many late models, including PS2-TV. Confirm the actual ROM rather than assuming compatibility from the case label. ConsoleMods’ FreeMcBoot guide and FAQ describe the model caveats.
Does FMCB support my console?
FMCB supports nearly all PS2 models, including fat systems and most Slims, but not every console. It also requires a compatible MagicGate memory card. Some third-party cards do not reliably support the per-card signatures used by updates, so a card advertised as preloaded is not a guarantee that it will work on a particular console. Check both the console’s ROM and the card’s compatibility. The PCSX2 setup guide also cautions that the newest Slim models are an exception to broad FMCB compatibility.
Why FMCB doesn’t work on some SCPH-9XXXX
Some late SCPH-90000-series consoles use boot ROM 2.30, which blocks the system-update exploit FMCB uses to start. ConsoleMods identifies units manufactured from 2008 Q3 (date code 8C) among the unsupported models, but warns that not every R-chassis or date-code-8C console is necessarily incompatible. The boot ROM check is more useful than relying on the model suffix or manufacturing code alone.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For many consoles that cannot start FMCB autonomously, OpenTuna/Fortuna is an alternative that must be launched manually each time; it can then start an ELF from the memory card. Its installer documentation states a target range of ROM 1.10 through 2.30, with “2.50?” marked uncertain, and lists fat and Slim models from SCPH-18000 through SCPH-90010 plus PS2-TV. Check the OpenTuna project documentation for the installer’s current support details before relying on that range.
FreeHDBoot (FHDB) is another software route, but it is for fat PS2 systems with a network adapter and an internal HDD. It installs to that drive and uses the APA drive format, so it is a more involved setup than booting from a memory card. The ConsoleMods PS2 getting-started guidance covers these alternatives.

How do software boot and modchips compare?
| Decision | Software-based boot | Modchip |
|---|---|---|
| What changes | An exploit or bootloader is stored or triggered through a supported route such as a memory card or HDD. FMCB uses the system-update mechanism to modify the startup menu. | A physical chip is installed inside the console by soldering it to the hardware. |
| Skill and risk | The PCSX2 setup guide rates FMCB “very low” skill and “minimal” risk. These are categorical judgments, not measured failure rates; compatibility and card constraints still apply. | The same guide rates modchip work “expert” skill and “high” risk, and recommends it only for experienced solderers. These are guidance labels, not measured failure rates. |
| Reversibility | FMCB is not permanent: remove the boot memory card to stop using that boot path. | The chip is an internal hardware modification; removing or changing it requires further hardware work. |
| Compatibility | FMCB supports nearly all models but is blocked by some boot ROMs and requires a compatible MagicGate memory card. OpenTuna is a manual-launch alternative for many late models. | Compatibility and features depend on the particular chip, console and installation; no universal model or feature guarantee applies. |
| Typical use | Start homebrew such as OPL from the PS2 menu or a bootloader. | Behavior is chip-specific. Some chips can launch homebrew or boot from a memory card using DEV1, but this varies by product. |
ConsoleMods summarizes FMCB this way: “This method, in comparison to modchipping, is not permanent, is easy to install and use, and less likely to conflict with other software; on the other hand, it cannot by itself allow the console to play import/backup discs.” That is the wiki page’s explanation, not a claim that FMCB enables disc playback or a guarantee about every installation. See the FMCB page and PCSX2 setup guidance.
What is FreeMcBoot (FMCB)?
FMCB is homebrew boot software installed on a compatible PS2 memory card. When the console starts with that card available, it can add a homebrew-capable startup menu without soldering a chip into the console. It is a boot route, not the homebrew application itself. Its removable nature also means taking out the boot card stops that FMCB path.

FMCB by itself does not enable playing import or backup discs. Its purpose here is launching homebrew. The card must support MagicGate functions correctly, and console boot ROM compatibility remains a separate requirement. For a console that already has a modchip, check that chip’s documentation: the FreeMcBoot FAQ records chip conflicts that can result in startup freezes or black screens. A chip may support DEV1 memory-card boot, but that depends on the chip and should not be assumed.
Will FMCB/FHDB allow me to play pirated game discs?
No. FMCB and FHDB are software boot methods for launching homebrew; neither by itself makes a PS2 play import or backup discs. A modchip’s behavior varies by product, but that is a separate hardware question and not a reason to treat FMCB or FHDB as disc-enabling software. This article covers homebrew boot compatibility, not bypassing game-copy protections.

How do OPL and storage fit into the choice?
OPL is a homebrew loader that can be started by a compatible boot method; it is neither an exploit nor a modchip. Its repository lists support for USB mass storage, MX4SIO (an SD card used through a memory-card-port adapter), iLink storage, SMBv1 network shares, and ATA/IDE HDDs. Supported formats include ISO, compressed ZSO, USB Extreme, ELF homebrew and, on HDD, HDLoader format. These are listed transports and formats, not a guarantee that every game will behave identically on every device. Check the OPL project repository and its game compatibility information for a particular title and setup.
There are therefore two separate decisions: how the console starts homebrew, and which application and storage arrangement to use afterward. For example, launching a utility from a memory card does not call for the same storage setup as using OPL with an internal HDD or a network share. A fat PS2 with an HDD may make FHDB relevant; a Slim owner considering network or MX4SIO use should check the hardware and software requirements for that route.

Which route makes sense for your PS2?
- Choose FMCB first if your console’s ROM supports it, you have a compatible MagicGate card, and you want a removable, no-solder boot path.
- Consider OpenTuna/Fortuna if the console cannot boot FMCB autonomously and the installer documentation lists its ROM/model; account for launching it manually at each start.
- Consider FHDB if you have a fat PS2, network adapter and internal HDD and are prepared for the HDD-based setup.
- Consider a modchip only if you need a chip-specific capability and can arrange expert installation. Verify the exact chip’s compatibility and behavior for your console.
- For an already-chipped console, consult the chip documentation before adding FMCB; documented conflicts can cause freezes or black screens.
Documentation can change as projects evolve. For the technical support details, consult the relevant project pages: FMCB, FMCB FAQ, OpenTuna, and OPL.
