To play Half-Life: Alyx on a conventional PC setup, you need a Windows 10 computer that meets Steam’s listed minimums and VR hardware that works with SteamVR, including tracked controllers. Valve Index is one compatible option, not a requirement. Valve’s current VR page also says Steam Frame can stream the game from a PC or run it standalone; check Valve’s page for the latest details because that capability is time-sensitive.
What do I need to play Half-Life: Alyx?
Steam labels Half-Life: Alyx as VR-only and lists SteamVR support and tracked-controller support. For a PC-connected setup, the essentials are:
- A Windows 10 PC meeting at least the listed minimum specifications below.
- A VR headset that works with SteamVR.
- Tracked VR controllers supported by the headset and its SteamVR setup.
Valve’s VR page says: “If you have VR hardware that works with a computer, then it works with SteamVR.” That is a broad compatibility rule, not a guarantee that every headset has identical controllers, tracking, connections, or availability. Valve’s Half-Life: Alyx VR page describes supported hardware and play options.
What PC specs do I need for Half-Life: Alyx?
These are Steam’s listed minimum requirements, not a guarantee of a particular image quality, refresh rate, or performance level. Steam’s store listing gives the following specifications:

Minimum specs versus high-refresh performance
Valve’s Steam Support performance guidance notes that complex VR gameplay at up to 144 Hz can keep an eight-core CPU and a 12 GB GPU completely busy, and points users toward advanced performance options. This is performance context—not a revised minimum, a universal target, or a promise that every PC and headset can reach 144 Hz. Valve’s Alyx performance tips are the source for that guidance.
Can I play Half-Life: Alyx with my VR headset?
Check whether the headset works with SteamVR and whether its controllers and tracking are usable in that setup. SteamVR compatibility is the starting point; the exact hardware requirements still depend on the headset. Some systems use different controllers, tracking hardware, and PC connections, so do not assume that a setup requirement for one model applies to another.

Valve Index details are a useful example of why model-specific checks matter: Steam Support says the Index headset uses DisplayPort 1.2 or higher, works with original Vive Base Stations or 2.0 versions, and is compatible with Vive and Vive Pro wands as well as Valve Index controllers. Those are Index-specific details, not requirements for all VR headsets. See Steam Support’s Index compatibility information.
Do I need a Valve Index?
No. Valve describes computer-connected VR hardware that works with SteamVR as compatible with Half-Life: Alyx; it does not say an Index is mandatory. Choose a headset based on SteamVR compatibility and the tracking, controllers, and PC connection the particular model requires. Can you play Half-Life: Alyx sitting down?
Yes. Valve lists both roomscale and sitting/standing play arrangements. Roomscale is an option, not a universal requirement. The VR page also lists teleport, shift, and continuous movement, along with controller styles ranging from finger tracking to trigger-based input. The available options mean you can choose among listed play and movement styles; they do not guarantee that a particular setup will be comfortable for every player.
Does Half-Life: Alyx need a gaming PC?
For the conventional PC-connected VR setup, yes: Steam lists Windows PC requirements, and the headset connects into a SteamVR setup. Valve’s current VR page makes a notable exception in its Steam Frame description: it says the device can stream Half-Life: Alyx from a gaming PC using its included wireless adapter or run the game standalone without a host PC. This is Valve’s current page-specific product claim, not a capability to assume for other headsets. Confirm the latest details on Valve’s VR page before choosing hardware.

Which accessories should I check before buying?
There is no universal accessory list for every VR system. Before buying, check the complete headset package and its own setup instructions for the pieces its tracking method and connection require.
- Controllers: Confirm tracked controllers are included or otherwise supported by the headset’s SteamVR setup; Steam lists tracked-controller support for the game.
- Tracking hardware: Check whether the specific headset requires separate tracking equipment or includes what it needs. Do not assume all systems use base stations.
- PC connection: Verify the headset’s required connection against your PC. Index’s DisplayPort requirement is an example, not a universal rule.
- PC capability: For PC-connected play, compare your computer with Steam’s minimum specifications and treat those as a baseline rather than a high-refresh guarantee.
A complete headset kit can simplify setup if it includes compatible controllers and required tracking pieces, but the right bundle depends on the headset. Steam Frame’s stated standalone option is distinct from ordinary PC-connected headset setups.
