Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Retro games often look blurry on modern TVs because the console sends a low-resolution analog picture that the television must convert and scale to fit its panel. The connection you use, whether the signal is 240p or interlaced 480i, and the TV’s processing all affect the result. Start by checking the cable and picture settings; if those do not give you an image you like, a compatible external scaler can handle some of the conversion.
Why a retro console can look blurry on an HDTV
Older consoles were designed for displays and video standards that differ from those of modern flat-panel TVs. The TV has to interpret the console’s signal and enlarge it to fill a much higher-resolution screen. How well that looks depends on the console’s output, the connection, the TV’s processing, and the selected picture mode. Scaling can change how the existing image is presented, but it cannot restore detail the console did not generate.
The cable and signal matter
Composite video—the single yellow RCA video plug—combines picture information in a way that can produce a less clear image than other analog connections. Some consoles also support S-Video or component video, which may offer a better signal path, but cable compatibility is specific to the console. RetroTINK warns that composite cables can produce low-quality results and documents support for composite, S-Video, and component on some of its scalers. Check the 2X Pro’s supported inputs and the 5X Pro’s input details before choosing a cable or device.
Low-resolution scaling can soften the image
A modern TV must scale the console’s lower-resolution image to its panel resolution. The TV does this when connected directly; an external scaler can take over some conversion and scaling work before the signal reaches the TV. The result depends on the source, processing mode, output resolution, and TV compatibility—not simply on whether a scaler is present.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
480i can flicker as well as look soft
Do not treat every unclear or unstable image as the same problem. A 240p signal and interlaced 480i are different formats. A progressive display needs to deinterlace 480i, and the chosen method can affect stability and flicker. RetroTINK says the 2X Pro uses bob deinterlacing, which may flicker with 480i sources; its 5X Pro describes motion-adaptive deinterlacing. 2X Pro details · 5X Pro details
How to troubleshoot the picture
- Identify the exact setup. Note the console model, cable type, and TV input in use. Check the console’s documentation or connector panel to see whether it supports composite, S-Video, or component. Confirm that the TV or any scaler you plan to use accepts the matching signal.
- Check framing and picture controls. Use the TV’s aspect-ratio setting to avoid stretching the picture, and consult its manual for sharpness and image-processing controls. Menu names and effects vary by TV, so there is no universal setting to recommend. Change one control at a time and compare the result.
- Work out whether the problem is blur or flicker. If the console is outputting 480i, deinterlacing is part of the display chain. Flicker may be related to how that signal is processed; a simple bob method can flicker, while other methods may behave differently. The preferred result depends on the game and equipment.
- Decide whether a scaler fits your setup. Compare its supported input with the console’s actual cable and its output modes with the TV’s documented compatibility. Check the current specifications for both devices before buying.
- Choose the presentation you prefer. A sharper, pixel-oriented image, a softer filtered picture, and CRT-style simulation are different looks. Scalers may offer adjustable scaling or CRT simulation, but no single mode is established as the best for every console, game, and viewer.
What a scaler can—and cannot—change
A scaler can convert supported analog inputs and produce an output format a modern TV can display. The right model depends on the source connection and the TV’s accepted modes. The manufacturer-listed capabilities below are not an independent hands-on comparison; confirm current specifications and compatibility before purchase.

| Option | Documented capabilities | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Direct TV connection | No universal behavior is established; TVs differ in supported inputs and internal conversion. | Input compatibility, aspect-ratio controls, processing, latency, and whether the picture is acceptable to you. |
| RetroTINK-2X Pro | Composite, S-Video, and component inputs; line-doubled 480p output; scanline mode. Its bob deinterlacing may flicker with 480i sources. Manufacturer details | Whether its input matches the console cable, whether the TV accepts 480p, and whether 480i flicker is acceptable. |
| RetroTINK-5X Pro | Supports 240p, 480i, and other analog formats; HDMI output up to 1080p; adjustable scaling and deinterlacing. The manufacturer cautions that composite can produce low-quality results and that not all TVs support its 1440p mode. Manufacturer details | Input type, desired scaling and deinterlacing controls, and the TV’s compatibility with the selected output mode. |
| RetroTINK-4K | The manufacturer describes composite through 1080p digital inputs, pixel-oriented scaling, motion-adaptive deinterlacing, CRT simulation, and output up to 4K60. Manufacturer details | Whether you need its broader input, output, and processing options; verify current model specifications and TV compatibility. |
| CRT display | A CRT is an alternative for someone seeking a CRT presentation; purchasing, safety, and availability details are not established here. | Condition, size, available inputs, local availability, and whether you prefer a CRT over modern-display convenience. |
Set expectations before changing hardware
First check the signal path you already have: identify the console and connection, make sure the picture is not stretched, and distinguish softness from 480i flicker. If a different cable is an option, verify that it matches the console’s outputs and the display or scaler’s inputs. If you consider a scaler, select it for the connection and output modes your equipment supports—not on the promise of a universally perfect image. A sharper pixel presentation, smoothing, or CRT simulation is a matter of preference, and scaling cannot add original game detail.
