To play a classic console on a modern TV, match the console’s video output to an input on the TV. Use a compatible cable when the ports match; if they do not, use a converter or scaler that specifically supports the console’s signal. Check the exact TV model and console before buying an adapter, because ports and requirements vary.
Check the ports before connecting anything
- Identify the console’s output. Check its label, manual and cable. Common older connections include composite AV, component video, SCART in some regions, and RF. The available output depends on the console and region.
- Inspect the TV’s inputs. Check the set itself or its manual rather than assuming what it has based on its age or brand. Some TVs use a manufacturer-specific breakout lead to provide composite inputs; Sony notes that connection options vary by model. - Match the connection type. Connect the console to a TV input that supports the same format, then select that input using the TV remote.
Choose a connection path

Connect composite or component video
Composite AV
Connect yellow video to the TV’s composite video input, and red and white audio to the corresponding right and left audio inputs. If the TV has no matching sockets, check its manual for a supplied or model-specific breakout lead before shopping for a converter. Select the TV input labeled for the connection you used.
Component video
If both console and TV support component, connect the matching component cable to the corresponding terminals and select that input. Do not assume that a component cable will work in a composite input, or vice versa; they carry video in different formats.
When the TV has HDMI but no matching analog input
Use an analog-to-HDMI converter or a gaming scaler that supports the console’s output. These devices are not interchangeable merely because their packaging says “HDMI.” Before buying, confirm the console’s signal type, supported video mode, audio handling, connector and direction of conversion. If you want scaling for a modern display, check that the device explicitly performs it rather than only converting the connection.

A purpose-built scaler may support more legacy formats, but product labels alone do not establish compatibility, picture quality or latency. The available guidance does not establish model-by-model image or lag measurements, so avoid treating claims such as “zero lag” or “works with every console” as verified without evidence for the specific device and setup.

If there is no picture or sound
- Confirm the TV is set to the input you connected.
- Check that each cable is seated in the matching port, and that any converter is connected in the correct direction.
- Verify the console and converter are powered. For NES Classic Edition and Super NES Classic Edition, Nintendo says the USB power source must be on.
- If using composite through a TV breakout lead, check the TV manual for the required lead and connection.
- Try the simplest direct connection available before adding a switch, receiver or extra converter, which introduces more opportunities for mismatched formats.
