Game characters can look different in trailers because the footage may be pre-rendered, staged as a real-time cinematic, or captured from ordinary gameplay—and those formats do not share the same camera, assets, lighting, or performance limits. A difference alone does not show that a game has misrepresented its final visuals; first check what kind of footage you are comparing and under what conditions it was recorded.
First check whether the trailer is gameplay, a real-time cinematic, or pre-rendered
These labels describe different kinds of footage, but “in-engine” or “real-time” does not necessarily mean a scene looks exactly like ordinary play.
- Pre-rendered cinematic: A video is rendered in advance and played back. It can receive separate rendering and post-production work without meeting the same per-frame interactive budget as gameplay. BioWare says that for Mass Effect Legendary Edition, the team re-rendered pre-rendered cutscenes in 4K where possible and upscaled original video where it could not. - Real-time cinematic: The game renders the scene as it runs, sometimes using game assets, but developers can stage it with a close camera, special lighting, or higher-quality assets. The Coalition described Gears Tactics cinematics as real-time and built from in-game assets, while also noting extra lighting and shadows and higher-quality character heads. - Gameplay capture: The footage shows interactive play, but the result still depends on the build, platform, graphics settings, camera, and development stage. A gameplay clip recorded on high settings is not evidence that every platform or setting will look identical.
There is no universal marketing-label standard established by these examples, so look for the footage type and conditions actually disclosed rather than assuming a label guarantees a pixel-for-pixel match.
Why the same character can have different model detail
Games can swap or simplify models according to camera distance and scene needs. A close-up may show more geometry or facial detail, while a distant character may use a less demanding version that preserves the recognizable shape.

PlatinumGames character modeler Kotegawa wrote that models are changed during play for level of detail, close-ups, facial expressions, and hand-focused actions. In Anarchy Reigns, the controlled character received more detail than enemies and other players, and models could be changed to show a face or hands more clearly. In Gears Tactics, the team used its highest LOD for cinematics and gameplay close-ups on high or ultra settings, then progressively reduced detail for the more distant isometric gameplay camera. Lower-specification settings used a more reduced LOD hierarchy. This is one studio’s implementation, not a universal rule. The Gears Tactics technical account. Why gameplay can have less visual detail
During play, the game must render frames interactively while keeping characters and important information readable. Developers balance detail against performance, memory, camera distance, and—in competitive games—fairness between graphics settings.
For example, Riot engineer Brandon “mochi” Wang wrote that VALORANT targets a frame time of 6.9 milliseconds or less to meet its 144 FPS quality bar. That is a target described for VALORANT, not a general budget for games. Riot also explains that visual options can affect gameplay clarity and that it avoids dynamic shadows in playable spaces when settings could otherwise remove useful information. Settings can also affect the detail available to a cinematic or distant object. The Gears Tactics team describes scalable materials and texture quality, along with streaming higher-quality textures for cinematic views and reducing quality as objects take up less of the screen. The same visual asset may therefore appear sharper in a close, carefully staged shot than during normal play.
Lighting and camera treatment can change how a model looks
A character’s appearance is not determined by its mesh alone. Light direction and intensity, shadows, material response, color correction, depth of field, and post-production can all change how skin, clothing, and facial features read on screen.

BioWare’s Mass Effect Legendary Edition account describes cinematic adjustments including color correction, composited effects, lighting, shadows, anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, and depth of field. These treatments can make an unchanged model look noticeably different from a gameplay frame. In real-time scenes, developers can similarly set lighting and camera framing specifically for the shot.

Gameplay models and poses need to communicate what a character is doing, not just look detailed in a still frame. Nintendo developers said that in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, animation communicates a character’s state; they balanced visible facial expression with a clear direction of travel. That example illustrates why a game may prioritize a readable pose or expression over matching the look of a dramatic trailer close-up. It is an art-direction choice tied to what the player needs to understand in motion.
How to assess a specific trailer
Before concluding that a trailer shows a different character model, compare the conditions that could account for the change:
- Footage type: Is it a pre-rendered video, a real-time cinematic, or gameplay capture?
- Camera and distance: Is the trailer using a close-up while gameplay uses a distant or elevated camera that may trigger a lower-detail model?
- Asset detail: Compare the head, geometry, texture resolution, facial features, and hands—not just the overall impression.
- Rendering treatment: Look for different lighting, shadows, materials, color grading, depth of field, or composited effects.
- Runtime conditions: Note the disclosed platform, graphics settings, build, and development stage.
- Gameplay purpose: Consider whether performance, clarity, or competitive fairness could explain a simpler look.
If those details are not disclosed, the footage alone may not establish which explanation applies. A visible difference is not, by itself, evidence of why it happened or what the finished game will look like.
