A compatible CRT is often the straightforward choice for a console with analog standard-definition output and for players who prefer the classic CRT presentation. A modern TV brings a larger, sharper, more versatile display, but the console’s signal may need conversion and scaling, and the TV’s processing can add delay. The right fit depends on the console, signal path, display and settings.
What changes between a CRT and a modern TV?
A CRT displays an image using a different technology and signal path from a modern fixed-pixel TV. For a retro console that already outputs an analog format accepted by the CRT, the connection can be direct. On a modern TV, that same signal may need to be converted into a digital format and scaled to the screen’s resolution.
Those differences affect three things separately: whether the console connects, how the picture is presented, and how much delay the complete setup adds. A preferred look is subjective; compatibility and latency depend on the specific equipment.
Which one looks better?
Choose a CRT for its characteristic presentation
If you want the familiar CRT look and have a set with an input that matches your console, a CRT can avoid an extra conversion step. The visual preference is personal, and CRTs vary by model and condition. The available evidence does not establish that every CRT looks better or is lag-free.

Choose a modern TV for size, sharpness and everyday versatility
A modern TV provides a large, high-resolution display that can also serve newer consoles and other devices. But a low-resolution console image must be handled by the scaler in the console, an external converter, the TV, or some combination. Scaling and deinterlacing behavior can change how the image looks; the result depends on the equipment and settings.
RTINGS’ supported-resolution testing concerns named formats sent through a TV’s physical inputs and whether the TV displays those formats natively; it does not include upscaling. It does not establish that a particular TV accepts analog 240p or handles 480i from every retro console. Which one plays better? Understand the whole signal path
Input lag is not determined by screen type alone. RTINGS describes TV input lag as involving image acquisition, video processing and display time. Scaling and motion interpolation are examples of processing that can contribute to delay. Its general recommendation is to use Game Mode to reduce TV-side processing, although that does not guarantee zero lag or establish a universal CRT-versus-modern-TV result. For a modern TV, check Game Mode and any additional picture processing on the exact input you will use. For a CRT, do not assume all models behave alike: processing-capable and HD CRTs may differ from a straightforward standard-definition set. The sources here do not provide an apples-to-apples latency comparison across CRTs, modern TVs and retro consoles.

Will a retro console work on a modern TV?
Possibly, but verify the signal chain before buying cables or equipment. Identify the console’s video output, the TV’s actual inputs and the formats each device supports. A port that looks compatible does not by itself establish that the TV accepts the console’s signal format.
- Identify the console output. Check the console documentation or its available video cable options to determine whether it sends composite, S-Video, component, RGB/SCART or a digital signal.
- Check the TV’s inputs and supported formats. Consult the exact model’s manual, including which formats are accepted on each input. Do not infer analog 240p or 480i support from a TV’s resolution list alone.
- Decide whether conversion is needed. If the TV does not accept the console’s output, use a compatible converter or scaler, or choose a display with a matching input.
- Test the complete setup. Check the picture, aspect ratio, scaling and deinterlacing behavior, and play with the TV’s Game Mode enabled. The console, converter and display together determine the result.
Using an external scaler with a modern TV
An external scaler is one way to connect analog-output consoles to a modern TV. For example, RetroTINK describes its 5X Pro as accepting composite, S-Video, component, RGB and SCART, with input formats including 240p and 480i, and providing digital output for an HDTV. These are manufacturer-published product specifications, not independent comparative test results or a requirement for every setup.

The 5X Pro’s manufacturer lists approximately 0.25 frames of latency in Framelock mode and 0.25–1.25 frames with Triple Buffering. These figures describe the scaler according to RetroTINK, not the end-to-end delay of a console, scaler and TV together. The same product page lists adjustable scanline functions and masks: these can add CRT-like visual treatments, but they should not be taken as proof that a scaler reproduces every aspect of a CRT.
If connecting a scaler to a CRT instead, check the particular output and converter chain. RetroTINK’s 5X Pro firmware update log notes the restoration of 240p output and addition of 480i output in a 2022 entry. It describes downscaling options as experimental or unsupported and says third-party HDMI-to-analog dongles are not guaranteed to work; verify current firmware and compatibility before relying on that path.

This is a setup decision, not a universal ranking. Compare the picture you prefer, compatibility, TV-side processing, scaling behavior, available space, and the cost and effort of any required cables or scaler.
