To connect a retro console to an HDMI-only TV, identify the console’s actual video signal, then use a converter or retro video processor that accepts it and outputs HDMI. If the TV has a matching analog input and you have the correct console cable, a direct connection may work instead. Check both devices’ ports before buying an adapter: “AV” can mean several different signal types.

Identify the console output and TV input

Start with the console’s model label and the shape and markings of its video-output port. Then inspect the TV’s inputs. Match the signal type, not just the cable colors or the word “AV.” Common formats include composite, S-Video, component, SCART/RGB and RF; some consoles use a proprietary connector on the console end of a cable.

  • Composite: Often carried over yellow video plus red and white audio RCA plugs.
  • Component: Uses separate video connections, commonly marked Y, Pb and Pr, in addition to audio.
  • Other formats: S-Video, SCART/RGB and RF require equipment that specifically supports that signal.

Red, white and yellow plugs do not prove that a cable’s console-side connector fits every console. Use a cable made for the exact console model and region.

Choose a connection path

Option When it fits Check before connecting
Direct analog connection The TV has an input matching the console’s signal, and you have a compatible cable. Confirm the input type and any console-specific cable requirement. Nintendo says Wii owners should use the cable supplied with the console or the Wii Component AV Cable; component requires matching TV inputs. Nintendo Wii connection instructions.
Composite-to-HDMI converter The console outputs composite and the TV has HDMI but no suitable analog input. Confirm composite input, supported regional video standard, HDMI output and power requirements. Elgato documents a Mini AV2HDMI example that converts composite input to 720p or 1080p HDMI; this is an example, not a guarantee of compatibility with every console. Elgato’s composite-to-HDMI guidance.
Dedicated retro video processor You need support for several analog formats or specific handling of standard-definition retro resolutions. Check supported inputs, resolutions, regional standards, interlaced-video handling and power. RetroTINK’s 2X Pro is a legacy product; its page lists composite, S-Video and component inputs and supported input resolutions, but availability and compatibility should be checked. RetroTINK 2X Pro specifications.

A converter’s HDMI output does not mean it accepts every analog format. A composite-only model will not take component or SCART/RGB unless its specifications explicitly say so. A processor may offer more input types and resolution handling, but its own compatibility limits still apply.

Connect the console to an HDMI TV

  1. Check the TV for a matching analog input. If it has one, use a compatible cable and select that input. For a Wii, Nintendo’s instructions are to plug the Wii AV Multi Out connector into the console and the cable’s RCA plugs into the TV or other equipment. Nintendo specifies the supplied Wii cable or the Wii Component AV Cable, rather than an arbitrary AV cable. See Nintendo’s Wii instructions.
  2. If the TV has no matching input, connect the analog signal to a compatible converter or processor. For composite, use equipment that explicitly accepts composite. For other signals, verify that the unit supports the console’s actual output.
  3. Connect the device’s HDMI output to the TV. Follow the device’s instructions for any required power connection. RetroTINK specifies 5V/1A microUSB power for the 2X Pro, for example; requirements differ by device. RetroTINK 2X Pro specifications.
  4. Turn on the console and TV, then select the matching TV input. If the converter is on HDMI 2, select HDMI 2. Samsung’s guidance describes this general converter-to-HDMI arrangement for older Wii consoles, while noting that the process can vary by console and connection. Samsung Germany’s Wii connection guide.

What to check when there is no picture

  • Verify the signal path. Confirm that the console output matches the converter’s input, that the cable is connected in the correct direction, and that the converter is powered as instructed.
  • Confirm the TV input. Select the HDMI port used by the converter, or the analog input used for a direct connection.
  • Check video-standard and resolution support. Console region and output format can matter. Elgato notes that some retro consoles produce non-standard signals that modern TVs may not display; compatibility depends on the equipment and signal. Elgato’s support article.
  • Check the processor’s limits. RetroTINK says the 2X Pro supports 240p, 288p, 480i and 576i inputs, but not 480p or higher. It also says 480i may flicker because the unit supports Bob deinterlacing only. Its optional N64/SNES S-Video cable is for NTSC consoles; PAL consoles need a special cable and must support S-Video. RetroTINK 2X Pro compatibility notes.
  • For a PS3, use the PS3-specific recovery procedure if its output setting is wrong. Sony warns that an incompatible video-output setting can temporarily blank the screen and describes resetting output to restore standard resolution. Sony also requires HDCP compatibility for HDMI video and audio output. These directions apply to PS3, not to retro consoles generally. Sony PS3 video output settings.
