1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo carry an artwork’s visual appeal into a game, identify the qualities that make it compelling, translate those into a few game-specific art pillars, then test the pillars across representative assets in playable scenes. Record the decisions that work so characters, environments, animation, and interface can share a coherent direction. Inspiration can inform original choices; reproducing or adapting the artwork itself raises a separate rights question.
Start by deciding what the game should look and feel like
Before creating assets, choose the game’s point of view and broad visual direction. Unity’s 2D game art style reference describes approaches such as minimalist, pixel art, illustrative, and pre-rendered 3D. These are examples, not a complete menu or a ranking. Unity’s 2D game creation workflow likewise recommends deciding on perspective and art style before beginning production.
When drawing inspiration from an existing work, separate what you admire from the specific images you might be tempted to reproduce. Ask what makes the work feel distinctive in visual terms, then decide how those qualities could serve your game’s setting, action, and intended emotional identity. The goal is a direction that works as game art—not a promise to recreate the source exactly.
Translate the inspiration into art pillars
Write a short set of rules that describe visible choices, not just broad moods such as “dreamlike” or “dark.” The GDC 2023 session “Art Direction Summit: Building a Visual Identity: An Art Direction Framework”, presented by Genevieve Routhier of EA DICE, frames art pillars as part of articulating a game’s visual identity. The following are useful dimensions to consider when writing your own pillars:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Shape language: Are forms mostly angular, rounded, elongated, or blocky?
- Palette and contrast: Which colors dominate, and how will important objects stand out from their surroundings?
- Material treatment: Do surfaces look flat, painterly, textured, glossy, or deliberately simplified?
- Composition: Where does the eye go, and how much visual space do characters and interactive objects receive?
- Detail: What gets rendered precisely, and what stays abstract or quiet?
These are prompts for making the direction usable, not a prescribed GDC checklist. A pillar should help someone make a concrete asset decision—for example, how to distinguish a dangerous object from scenery—not merely describe the intended atmosphere.
Test the direction in a playable scene
Do not judge a style only from a polished character portrait or a single environment painting. Make a small cross-section of the game’s art, such as one character, one environment, and one interface element, and assemble them in a playable scene. Check whether they remain readable and coherent while the player moves and interacts.

Unity’s workflow covers sprites, environments, animation, graphics, testing, optimization, and publishing. That breadth is a reminder that a game’s visual identity has to survive production and play, not just look convincing as key art. Use the prototype to find rules that are hard to apply across the actual asset set or that make important objects difficult to read, then revise the direction.
Document the decisions that work
Once the prototype establishes a direction, turn its successful choices into a practical guide for the next assets. Include examples of what fits and what does not, alongside the visual rules that matter for your project. Keep the guide focused on decisions artists and other contributors can apply consistently; there is no single required document template.

As the asset set grows, use the guide to check that characters, environments, animation, and interface still belong to the same game. If a rule repeatedly breaks down in production or in the engine, treat that as a reason to refine the rule rather than asking every new asset to solve the problem independently.

Copyright questions depend on what the game actually uses and the applicable law. The U.S. Copyright Office’s guidance says copyright protects original visual artwork, and that owners hold rights that include adaptation and public display. It states: “If you want to use someone else’s work in these ways, you must get permission from the owner.” The guidance also recognizes statutory exceptions and limitations, so that statement should not be treated as an exception-free rule. See the Copyright Office’s “What Visual and Graphic Artists Should Know about Copyright”.

The Office’s “Games” guidance draws a general distinction: a game idea, its title, and methods of play are not protected by copyright as such, while sufficiently expressive text or pictorial elements may be protected. That distinction is not a decision about whether a particular game’s resemblance to a particular artwork is lawful.
If you plan to reproduce, adapt, or display another person’s actual artwork, establish who holds the relevant rights and what the license permits; seek permission where required. The applicable rights and exceptions can depend on the work, use, and jurisdiction, so project-specific legal review may be appropriate.
