Connect your Nintendo Switch 2 to the Internet, then check the game from the HOME Menu: highlight its icon without launching it, press + or −, and choose Software Update > Via the Internet. If an update is available, follow the prompts to download and install it. This checks for a game software update; it does not tell you whether the physical card is a newer manufacturing revision.
Check for an update from the HOME Menu
- Connect the console to the Internet.
- Go to the HOME Menu and highlight the game card’s software icon. Do not start the game.
- Press + or − on the controller.
- Select Software Update, then Via the Internet.
- If the console finds an update, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install it.
Nintendo also says an available update may be offered when you start a game while the console is online. To allow automatic downloads, enable Software Auto-Updates under System Settings > System. Nintendo’s Switch 2 software update instructions cover the manual check and these alternatives.
What the result does—and does not—tell you
The online check asks whether Nintendo has an available software update for that title. It is not a check of the cartridge’s manufacturing revision. Because no particular game is specified here, there is no general version number, update size, or requirement that applies to every cartridge. Check the individual title on the console; an update is not necessarily required to play.
Regular game cards and game-key cards work differently
A regular game card stores the game data and, according to Nintendo’s general guidance, can be played without an Internet connection. Internet access is needed to download software update data, and online modes require a connection. Nintendo’s guidance on Internet requirements distinguishes those uses.

A game-key card does not contain the full game data. It acts as a key to download that data, so first use requires Internet access and enough space in system storage or on a microSD Express card. Nintendo says the required space is shown on the package. After the game data is downloaded, the card must still be inserted to play, but an Internet connection is not required for ordinary offline play. That first full-game download is separate from the HOME Menu update check: downloading the game data for a game-key card is not the same as checking whether an update is available for the game.

System updates are separate from game updates
Nintendo’s system update history says system version 20.1.1 is required to use Switch 2 game-key cards and microSD Express cards. That is a console compatibility requirement, not a game-specific software update. Nintendo Australia’s system update information lists the requirement.
