What’s actually slowing this PC down?

No—not according to Steam’s estimated game revenue, which reached a September high in 2026. But that record does not prove rising PC prices had no effect on players’ spending: the available figures track platform revenue, not the impact of hardware costs on individual budgets.
What Steam’s September record shows
Alinea Analytics estimates that Steam generated $1.7 billion in game revenue in September 2026, making it the platform’s best September to date and 13% higher than the previous September record, set in 2025. The estimate was also reported by Root Nation and Tom’s Hardware.
The broader figures point in the same direction: Alinea estimates Steam revenue at $5.5 billion for the third quarter of 2026, up 12% year over year. From January through September, it estimates $16.5 billion, compared with $14.5 billion over the same period in 2025; Alinea describes that increase as 13%.
These are estimates from analytics firm Alinea Analytics, not Valve financial disclosures or audited totals. Alinea’s Rhys Elliott described the September result as “Steam generated $1.7 billion in September 2026, the platform’s best September to date, up 13% on the previous record, September of last year.”

Do the figures prove expensive PCs did not curb spending?
No. They show that estimated game revenue rose while PC hardware prices were described as rising; they do not measure hardware affordability, players’ budgets, or how much customers would have spent if components had cost less. Revenue growth cannot, by itself, establish that hardware costs had no effect.
Nor do the figures explain why revenue increased. Alinea’s totals capture the platform-wide outcome, not the separate contribution of game prices, player numbers, in-game purchases, or any changes in spending by individual customers. The record is evidence of strong Steam revenue, not a causal test of PC costs.

What contributed to September’s revenue?
Established games remained a large part of the top earners
Alinea estimates that the 500 highest-grossing Steam games accounted for about three-quarters of September revenue. Within that top-500 revenue pool, established intellectual property represented 79.5%, including 3.8% from remakes and remasters. New intellectual property launched in 2026 accounted for the other 20.5%. Those percentages describe the top 500’s revenue, not all games or all Steam activity.
New releases included a standout
Alinea estimates that Wardogs earned $86.9 million on Steam in September after entering early access on September 10. It estimates $30.4 million for Onimusha: Way of the Sword and $26.9 million for The Blood of Dawnwalker. These are estimates for the named titles, not Valve-reported sales figures.

Established free-to-play games also mattered
Alinea estimates that Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends, PUBG, and Dota 2 together earned nearly $168 million on Steam in September—nearly 10% of the platform’s estimated monthly revenue. The figures show that familiar ongoing games formed a substantial part of the month’s earnings alongside new releases.
How crowded was Steam’s release calendar?
Root Nation reported that 20,220 games had launched on Steam by October 1, 2026, and that another 1,156 were scheduled for October. The October number refers to planned releases, not confirmed launches. For comparison, Root Nation reported 21,268 Steam game launches across all of 2025.

The record offers one useful signal: higher PC hardware costs had not coincided with a collapse in Steam’s estimated game revenue by September 2026. It does not tell players whether gaming PCs became more affordable, whether hardware prices changed their own purchasing decisions, or whether those costs suppressed revenue relative to what it otherwise might have been.

Steam’s reach also includes handheld play: Valve sells the Steam Deck as a handheld gaming PC, and its official charts include a Steam Deck category. That establishes the product’s place in Valve’s ecosystem, but it does not show that Deck sales drove the September revenue record.
