For most YouTube creators, the best free workflow is OBS Studio for screen recording, followed by DaVinci Resolve or Shotcut for editing. OBS is built for recording and live streaming; an editor is what you use to trim footage, add titles, balance sound, and export a finished video. If you want one app that also lists screen-capture inputs, consider Shotcut. The right choice depends on your computer, operating system, video format, and how much editing control you need.

Why OBS and an editor are often a better workflow

Use OBS to capture

OBS Studio is for recording and live streaming, rather than replacing a full post-production editor. The OBS Project also says its API enables plugins and scripts. Choose it when you want a dedicated recording tool and are comfortable configuring your capture and audio sources.

Find current installers and operating-system selection on the official OBS download page. It also provides Ubuntu PPA installation guidance. Confirm the current instructions for your system before installing.

Use an editor to finish the video

After recording, an editor lets you shape the video: remove pauses, arrange clips, add titles, balance audio, and prepare an export. DaVinci Resolve offers the broadest listed post-production toolset here: its Cut and Edit pages handle editing, Fusion covers visual effects and motion graphics, Color handles color work, Fairlight handles audio, and Media and Deliver support organization and output. Blackmagic Design offers a free version as well as a paid Studio edition with additional features; check the current edition details if you depend on a particular effect or capability.

Gameplay videos

OBS is a sensible capture starting point, while the choice of editor depends on how much post-production you plan to do. Resolve’s listed toolset suits creators who want detailed editing and finishing options. Shotcut offers an alternative without a paid Studio edition. Neither product description establishes a performance winner for all gaming PCs, so check compatibility and workload against your own system.

Check your computer and the free-edition boundaries

  • Operating system: OBS provides operating-system selection and Ubuntu guidance on its download page. Shotcut lists Windows, Mac, and Linux. Check each project’s current download details for your system.
  • Hardware: Editing workloads vary with footage and project complexity. The product descriptions cited here do not provide a complete comparative performance benchmark, so no app can be declared the smoothest on every computer.
  • Feature access: Blackmagic distinguishes the free DaVinci Resolve edition from Studio, which adds features. Check the current edition boundary before building a workflow around a specific capability.
  • Export and free-tier terms: Confirm current formats, export conditions, and free access for the features you plan to use, especially when considering CapCut.

A practical free workflow

  1. Choose a capture tool: Install OBS Studio from the official download page and confirm that your operating system is supported.
  2. Record a short sample: Capture the type of screen activity and audio you plan to use. Check that both picture and sound are present before recording a full session.
  3. Pick an editor: Use DaVinci Resolve for its listed breadth across editing, color, effects, and audio; use Shotcut if its free, open-source, cross-platform workflow is a better fit.
  4. Edit and export: Cut unwanted sections, arrange the useful material, add any needed titles, check audio balance, and export using settings appropriate to your intended YouTube video. Confirm current format and export options in the editor you selected.
  5. Review the finished file: Play the export from beginning to end before uploading, checking for missing audio, unwanted gaps, and errors in the final cut.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Recording software does not grant rights to the material it captures. Before publishing, make sure you have permission to use recorded music, game footage, other creators’ clips, or other protected material where permission is required. Also consider whether the finished video adds meaningful original commentary, explanation, or editing rather than relying on reused material. Review YouTube’s current rules for the content and monetization questions relevant to your channel; the tools above do not determine whether a video complies.
