A strong YouTube intro quickly delivers on the title and thumbnail, gives viewers a clear reason to stay, and moves into the video’s substance. A strong outro finishes the payoff, then points interested viewers to one relevant next video or playlist. Neither needs a long logo animation or a string of unrelated requests.
How do I make a YouTube intro?
Build the opening around the specific promise your title and thumbnail make. Start with the answer, result, question, problem, or moment that genuinely belongs to the video. Then orient viewers briefly—tell them what they will get or what you will cover if that helps—and begin the main content.
- Match the promise. Make the opening clearly connected to the title and thumbnail. Do not tease a result the video never delivers.
- Give a reason to stay. State what viewers will learn, see, or be able to do. Keep it concrete and relevant to this video.
- Move into the substance. Avoid delaying the main point with unrelated housekeeping, a long preamble, or an elaborate brand sequence.
There is no universally effective script or exact opening duration established by YouTube’s guidance. Treat the wording and pacing as choices to test against your own audience-retention data, not as a formula that guarantees more views.
For a gaming video
If the title promises a boss strategy, open with the key obstacle or the result the strategy achieves, then explain what the viewer will learn. If it promises a review, quickly state the question the review answers and move into your judgment. Keep a highlight or joke only when it supports the promise rather than postponing it.

How long should a YouTube intro be?
YouTube does not establish a universal ideal length for an intro. Its “Intro” audience-retention measure reports the percentage of your audience still watching after the first 30 seconds; that 30-second mark is a measurement point, not a recommended intro duration. Use it to see how viewers respond to your opening, not as a target that every video must meet. YouTube Help: Measure key moments for audience retention.
Should I use a logo animation or recurring opening?
Use branding only to the extent it serves the video. A short identifying cue may suit your format, but YouTube’s advice is to check whether the first 30 seconds match the title and thumbnail and to experiment with different opening styles. Do not assume a fixed logo animation helps—or hurts—without checking how your videos perform.

What should I put in a YouTube outro?
- Complete the payoff first. Finish the answer, match result, review verdict, or explanation the video promised before asking for another action.
- Choose one relevant next step. Invite viewers to a closely related video or playlist when it genuinely continues what they just watched. Keep the request concise.
- Leave a clear visual handoff. Allow space and time for the end-screen elements. Avoid covering important gameplay, text, or other visuals viewers need to see.
YouTube’s Creator Liaison has advised creators to design end screens and calls to action as part of the overall video experience, and not to let overlays cover crucial visuals. End screens may be hidden by viewers, and their display can vary with performance, viewer behavior, device, and context. YouTube Blog, “Hiding end screens: What YouTube creators need to know”.
How do I add a YouTube end screen?
YouTube Help says end screens can appear in the last 5–20 seconds of a video, and the video must be at least 25 seconds long. You can use them to promote videos, encourage subscriptions, and more. Check the current end-screen editor in YouTube Studio when arranging a video; not every viewer or viewing context will show the same overlay.

See YouTube Help: Add end screens to videos for the platform’s current guidance.
When an info card may be a better handoff
An info card can point to a relevant video, playlist, channel, or eligible external link during the video. YouTube Creator Academy says creators can add up to five cards; external links require participation in the YouTube Partner Program, and cards are unavailable on videos set as made for kids. Use a card where the recommendation fits naturally, not as an interruption to the main content. YouTube Creator Academy: Add info cards to videos.

How do I tell whether my intro and outro are working?
- Open the video-level audience-retention report in YouTube Studio. YouTube says retention data typically takes 1–2 days to process.
- Inspect the opening and the rest of the graph. YouTube’s retention graph can show gradual declines, dips, spikes, and top moments. A dip can mean viewers skipped a section or left; a spike may reflect rewatching or sharing, or a section that was unclear. Treat these as clues to investigate, not proof of one cause.
- Compare like with like when possible. Similar-length videos can give more useful context than comparing videos with very different formats or pacing.
- Change one opening element at a time. For example, test a direct answer against a brief orientation before changing the branding and pacing too. This is a practical way to interpret results, not a YouTube-prescribed testing protocol.
- Review the end-screen element click rate. Keep a next-video invitation when it is relevant and the data supports it; revise the handoff if viewers are not clicking.
The 30-second intro measure is a diagnostic, not a universal benchmark or a guarantee of success. YouTube’s platform guidance does not promise that a particular intro or outro will increase retention by a set amount.
