For a compatible PS5 Digital Edition or PS5 Pro, Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 detachable drive is the documented option. Xbox Series X disc-drive models have an optical drive built in, while Xbox says Series S does not support external USB disc drives. On a gaming PC, an external USB DVD or Blu-ray drive can handle compatible discs, but check formats and playback software before buying.

A generic PC optical drive is not a universal console accessory. The host device determines whether a drive can be used at all, so start with compatibility rather than comparing speed claims.
Best option for a compatible PS5 Digital Edition: Sony CFI-ZDD1
Sony’s detachable CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive is the documented add-on for CFI-2000 PS5 Digital Edition consoles and CFI-7000 model-group consoles; Sony’s product page also names PS5 Pro as compatible. Sony’s support page says the CFI-1000 PS5 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media. Check the console’s exact model group before ordering: “PS5 Digital Edition” alone is not enough to establish compatibility. See Sony’s model and setup guidance and the CFI-ZDD1 product page.
The drive must be paired with the console over the internet during setup. If your plan depends on configuring it entirely offline, that requirement matters. Sony lists Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback for the accessory; the company’s broader disc-format support list is a media reference, not a guarantee for every game, region, or damaged disc.

PlayStation disc formats and related caveats
Sony’s PS5 media support page lists Ultra HD Blu-ray; Blu-ray formats including BD-ROM and BD-R/RE with specified recording formats; and DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW. It lists CD, BD-RE version 1.0, BD-R/RE XL, and unfinalized DVDs as unsupported on PS5 and PS4. These format notes concern media playback and should not be treated as a blanket promise about all discs. PlayStation’s disc-format guidance.
PS4 has a built-in disc slot. Sony says Blu-ray or DVD playback on PS4 requires enabling the media playback feature over the internet once. That is a separate process from pairing the PS5 add-on.

Xbox: built-in drive on Series X; no USB drive for Series S
Xbox identifies a UHD Blu-ray optical drive on the Xbox Series X disc-drive model. Its FAQ says Series X can play supported Xbox original, Xbox 360, and Xbox One game discs, as well as DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray movies; movie discs use the Blu-ray Player app. The FAQ also says Xbox Series S is all-digital and does not support external USB disc drives. That FAQ was published in 2020, so treat it as the cited official statement rather than a claim about any later policy change. Xbox Series X product details · Xbox Series X|S FAQ.
Choosing an external optical drive for a gaming PC
PC is the flexible case, but compatibility still depends on the drive, disc, operating system, and software. Microsoft documents troubleshooting for CD/DVD drives that are missing or not recognized in Windows 10 and Windows 11; that guidance does not certify any particular retail drive. Check the drive maker’s current specifications and the software publisher’s requirements before buying. Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting page.

DVD, Blu-ray, or both?
- DVD drive: Choose this if your discs are DVDs or CDs and you do not need Blu-ray support. Check whether the model reads only or also writes the formats you need.
- Blu-ray drive: Choose this when you need to read or write supported Blu-ray formats as well as any DVD/CD formats listed by the manufacturer. Blu-ray movie playback may require compatible software; verify software and system requirements rather than assuming Windows support alone is sufficient.
- UHD Blu-ray: Do not assume that a drive described as “Blu-ray” also supports UHD Blu-ray playback on a PC. Confirm the exact format and software requirements with the manufacturer and software publisher.
Check the connection and the job
- Confirm the drive’s connector matches an available USB port and check whether it needs more power than that connection supplies.
- Distinguish reading from writing: a drive that reads a format may not be able to burn it.
- Match the drive to the task—game-disc access, video playback, or reading and writing data. A PC drive’s ability to read optical media does not make it usable for console game discs.
- For a specific model, use the current manufacturer listing for format and operating-system support. Microsoft’s general support page is for Windows troubleshooting, not a retail-drive endorsement.
Do not confuse disc drives with external game storage
An external SSD or hard drive adds storage space; it does not read game discs. PlayStation documents USB extended storage separately from its optical-drive accessories. PS5 games can be stored on an external USB drive, but PlayStation says they must be copied back to console storage to play. See PlayStation’s extended-storage requirements.

- Identify the host and exact model. For PS5, check the model group; for Xbox, determine whether the console is a Series X disc-drive model or a Series S; for PC, note the Windows version and available USB ports.
- Write down the disc formats you need. Separate CD, DVD, Blu-ray, and UHD Blu-ray, and specify whether you need reading, writing, or both.
- Check setup and software requirements. The PS5 accessory needs internet pairing during setup; PC Blu-ray playback depends on compatible software and system support.
- Buy only after confirming the exact model’s specifications. Check connection, power, supported formats, and the intended use against the manufacturer’s current information.
There is no sound basis here for ranking PC retail drives by read speed, noise, reliability, or game loading time: the cited sources do not provide comparative retail-drive tests. For consoles, documented device compatibility is the decisive filter.
