Choose premium pricing if you are selling a complete game whose value players can judge before buying. Choose free-to-play if the design can support broad access and ongoing engagement—and your team can run the optional-purchase systems it needs. If players need to experience the game to understand its appeal, consider a paid game with a free demo. On Steam, a demo is free: Steam does not support a paywall that blocks play and asks customers to pay to continue the same game.
What each model asks players to pay for
| Model | What the player pays for | Worth considering when | Main risk to assess |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | Full game access through an upfront purchase | The game is a complete experience whose value can be explained and compared before purchase | Purchase friction and whether the price matches the game’s scope and comparable titles |
| Free-to-play | Free access, with optional purchases such as DLC or microtransactions | The design supports broad access, ongoing engagement, and optional spending | Acquiring and retaining players; transaction and backend operations if using microtransactions |
| Paid game with a free demo | The full game is paid; a sample is free | Hands-on play can help buyers understand the core loop or quality | Demo quality and timing: the sample needs to represent the full experience well |
This is a decision framework based on Steam’s documented features and recommendations, not a finding that one model earns more. The available platform guidance does not establish a universally best pricing model for indie games.
How to decide which model fits your game
Start with the product and the transaction
Ask what you are selling: one complete game, an ongoing experience with optional purchases, or a paid game whose uncertainty can be reduced with a free sample. The model should follow the game’s structure and the team’s ability to support it, not a universal price formula. Steam supports full-game purchases, DLC, in-game microtransactions, and recurring subscriptions; its pricing guidance focuses on package pricing. Steamworks: Pricing.
Assess premium pricing against comparable games
Steam recommends considering expected playtime, replayability, multiplayer, Early Access plans, comparable titles, planned promotions, reviews, and customer feedback. Look at games of a similar nature and what their players say; simply charging less than competitors is not a pricing strategy in itself. Steam states that pricing decisions are in developers’ hands, while providing tools for managing prices and discounts.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check whether free-to-play is operationally sustainable
Free access removes the purchase price as an entry barrier, but it does not remove the work of building and maintaining a business model. Steam says player acquisition and retention are important to free-to-play. If you plan to use microtransactions, Steam describes the need for a reliable, secure backend to manage transactions, inventory, entitlements, and fraud reconciliation. Include that continuing work in your decision, alongside whether optional purchases fit the game. Steamworks: Microtransactions.
Use a demo to answer a specific buyer question
A demo is most useful when playing a sample gives buyers evidence they cannot get from a trailer or description—for example, how the core loop feels. Valve says customers generally use a demo to inform a purchase decision and advises making it high quality and representative of the full game. Steam generally recommends releasing a demo at launch, though an earlier release can make sense in some circumstances. Its demo guidance also describes linking the demo’s store page to the full game and says demos can appear where free games appear. Steamworks: Demos.

What “paid demo” means on Steam
The phrase can mean different things: a paid trial, a paid prologue, or an Early Access release. Steam’s documented demo feature is free, and Steam says it does not support a model that blocks a customer and requires payment to continue playing the same game. If you want players to sample a paid game on Steam, use a free demo and sell the full game separately. The cited guidance does not establish whether a separately packaged, independently sold prologue complies with every applicable rule; verify the current rules for the specific product and platform rather than treating it as a demo. Steam’s pricing FAQ explains the restriction: Steamworks: Pricing FAQ.
Plan Steam prices and regional availability
Steam offers developers conversion tools based on exchange rates, purchasing power, or a combination of factors. Conversion is a starting point, not an instruction to ignore local conditions: Steam recommends considering local economic conditions and comparable entertainment products. Its documentation says a product without a price in a local currency may be unavailable to customers who rely on that currency. Review regional prices deliberately, and confirm current Steamworks rules before launch because platform thresholds and processes can change. Steamworks: Currency and pricing.

Steam says its store largely responds to customer interest. For free-to-play games, it counts in-game revenue in a similar way to sales of paid games, while noting that free-to-play titles generally are not eligible for curated Daily Deals, Midweek Deals, or Weekend Deals spotlights. Other forms of curated marketing may be available depending on a title’s scale and success. Free-to-play therefore is not a guaranteed shortcut to visibility. Steamworks: Visibility.

Pricing mechanics matter after launch as well as at release. Steam’s documentation says developers should wait 30 days after release before changing a price, except to correct a major pricing error; a price increase can also trigger a 30-day discount cooldown. Steam asks for at least one week’s notice when changing a paid game to free. For a free-to-paid change, its pricing FAQ says existing owners of the free license retain the ability to play and asks for one week’s notice of the business-model switch. Check the current pricing page and FAQ before scheduling a change: Steamworks: Pricing and Steamworks: Pricing FAQ.

A practical decision checklist
- Define the transaction: Is this a complete one-time purchase, an ongoing free experience with optional purchases, or a paid game with a free sample?
- For premium, benchmark thoughtfully: Compare games of similar scope and nature, expected playtime, replayability, multiplayer, launch state, planned promotions, reviews, and customer feedback.
- For free-to-play, budget for operations: Decide how you will attract and retain players, and account for backend, inventory, entitlement, transaction, and fraud-management work if you use Steam microtransactions.
- For a demo, set a clear purpose: Identify what uncertainty it resolves, then make the sample polished and representative. Decide whether launch or an earlier release better serves that purpose.
- For Steam, price regions and timing: Review converted prices, local conditions, availability, price-change timing, and any planned move between paid and free.
- Keep the platform scope clear: Steam’s documented demo and paywall rules should not be assumed to describe every other store. Check the current policy of each platform where you plan to release.
