How to Choose a Gaming PC or Console for Big-Budget Action Games

Choose the games first, then compare their platform availability, performance targets, multiplayer features, and the cost of a complete PC or console setup.

How do I choose a gaming PC or console for big-budget action games? Start with the exact games you want to play, then decide what resolution and frame rate you expect, which platform has the right versions and multiplayer features, and what the complete setup will cost. A PC lets you match components to a performance target; a console offers a fixed configuration and a more straightforward setup. Neither is the right choice for every player.

Start with the games, not the platform

Make a short list of the action games you expect to play, including the specific edition and where you plan to buy it. A title may be available on PC and one console but not another, and features such as cross-play, cross-progression, controller support, and subscription inclusion are game-specific. Check the game’s official page and your regional store before buying hardware.

On Xbox, Play Anywhere applies to supported games: those titles can be played on PC, Xbox consoles, and supported handhelds without buying an additional copy. Xbox also describes saves, add-ons, and achievements carrying across devices for supported experiences. Cross-play depends on whether the individual game supports it, and Game Pass titles and features vary over time by region, plan, and platform. These are not guarantees for every Xbox game; see Xbox’s PC gaming information.

Backwards compatibility is also specific to a platform and title. Xbox Wire reported on July 22, 2026 that Xbox backward compatibility on PC entered early release with four original Xbox games. That dated announcement describes an early-release feature, not broad compatibility for an entire legacy library: Xbox Wire’s announcement.

Decide what performance you actually want

Write down a target for resolution, frame rate, and graphics settings before comparing PCs. A minimum requirement can describe a playable baseline at low settings, not the experience you have in mind for a new action game. Higher resolution or frame rates generally call for stronger hardware, and the target varies by game.

For example, PlayStation’s published requirements for Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition on PC distinguish four average-performance tiers:

The Psychology of Money: Timeless lessons on wealth, greed, and happiness
  • Ideal for Gifting
  • Ideal for a bookworm
  • Compact for travelling
Tier Published average target Example GPU CPU Memory and storage
Minimum 720p/30 fps, very low settings GTX 1650 4 GB or RX 5500 XT 4 GB Not stated in the cited tier 16 GB RAM; 150 GB SSD
Recommended 1080p/60 fps, medium settings RTX 3060 or RX 5700 Intel Core i5-8600 or Ryzen 5 3600 16 GB RAM; 150 GB SSD
High 1440p/60 fps or 4K/30 fps, high settings RTX 3070 or RX 6800 Not stated in the cited tier 16 GB RAM; 150 GB SSD
Very high 4K/60 fps, very-high settings RTX 4080 or RX 7900 XT Intel Core i7-11700 or Ryzen 7 5700X 16 GB RAM; 150 GB SSD

These are PlayStation’s targets for Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition on PC, not a universal buying guide. Santa Monica Studio’s chart for God of War Ragnarök on PC gives a different example: its minimum tier targets average 1080p/30 fps on low settings with a GTX 1060 or RX 5500 XT, 8 GB RAM, and a 190 GB SSD; its recommended tier targets average 1080p/60 fps at medium settings with an RTX 2060 Super or RX 5700, 16 GB RAM, and a 190 GB SSD. Its ultra tier targets average 4K/60 fps at ultra settings with an RTX 4070 Ti or RX 7900 XT.

Use the official recommended tier as a practical starting point for a PC aimed at a game’s stated recommended target. If you want a higher resolution or frame rate, consult that game’s higher tiers rather than assuming the recommended parts will deliver it. Xbox puts the caveat plainly: “System requirements may vary by game, and performance scales with higher-end systems.”

Compare the PC and console trade-offs

What matters Gaming PC Console
Performance target Choose components against the requirements for your games and desired resolution and frame rate. Supported games may offer adjustable settings. Fixed hardware; individual games may offer different performance or graphics modes.
Game access PC editions may be sold through multiple storefronts or services; availability and features depend on the title. Library and backwards compatibility depend on console generation and game.
Input and display Keyboard and mouse or supported controllers; some titles offer ultrawide and multi-monitor modes. Typically controller-centred, connected to a TV or monitor.
Multiplayer Cross-play and cross-progression are game-dependent. Friends, cross-play, and online-service requirements depend on the game and platform.
Setup More choices and potential tuning; Windows and component drivers may need updates. Fewer hardware choices and a simpler fixed configuration.
Total cost PC, display, storage, input devices, games, and any service you choose. Console, display if needed, games, accessories, and any recurring service you choose.

There is no live price comparison here: local prices, availability, and subscription terms change. Compare the actual games and equipment you expect to pay for, rather than treating the console or tower price as the entire cost.

Check the whole PC setup, not just the graphics card

For each game, compare the official requirements with the PC’s GPU, CPU, RAM, and available SSD space. The cited PC requirements call for 150 GB for Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition and 190 GB for God of War Ragnarök. Those examples make storage worth checking against the space already occupied by your games; confirm the current requirement and leave room for the rest of your library.

Also include a display that suits your chosen target, plus whichever input device and headset you actually need. A higher-resolution display can make a more demanding performance target relevant; buying hardware for a target you will not use can be poor value. If you prefer controller input, consider a PC-compatible controller, but verify support for the particular game.

Check console and PC features title by title

Console modes and services

Before choosing a console, verify that your games are available for that model and edition, whether the people you play with use compatible platforms, and whether online play or a subscription is required. Catalogue access can change, so do not assume a game will remain included in a service.

PC controller and display support

PlayStation says its PlayStation Studios PC games support mouse and keyboard and other controllers, but specific features vary by title. Some DualSense features, including haptics or adaptive triggers, may require a wired connection. Check the game’s own support details rather than assuming every controller feature works on PC; see PlayStation’s PC games and accessories guidance.

Horizon Forbidden West’s PC version lists 21:9 ultrawide, 32:9 super-ultrawide, and 48:9 triple-monitor modes, each requiring compatible hardware and displays. It also lists DLSS 3, DLAA, Reflex, FSR, and XeSS support. Those are features of that specific game, not promises about all PC action games; details are on its PC feature page.

Use this buying checklist

  1. List your games. Confirm each title, edition, region, and platform availability on an official game or store page.
  2. Set a performance target. Choose the resolution, frame rate, and settings you want, then look up that game’s official PC requirements or console performance modes.
  3. Check your play group and features. Verify cross-play, cross-progression, online-service needs, controller support, and any subscription catalogue inclusion for each relevant title.
  4. Price the complete setup. Include the PC or console, display, storage, input devices, games, and only the subscriptions you expect to use.
  5. Choose for your tolerance for setup. Pick a PC if component choice and tuning suit you; pick a console if you prefer a fixed configuration and simpler setup, provided its library fits your needs.
