1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can pair a Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controller with a Meta Quest headset, but pairing does not make it work in every Quest game or menu. Turn on the controller, hold its Pair button until the Xbox button flashes, then select it in Quest’s Bluetooth settings. For Xbox Cloud Gaming, the Quest app includes a controller-pairing tutorial. If it connects but buttons do nothing, first check whether the app supports gamepads.
How do I connect an Xbox controller to my Meta Quest?
First confirm that your exact controller revision has Bluetooth. Xbox’s Quest announcement says Quest works with Xbox Wireless Controllers that support Bluetooth; it does not say every wireless Xbox controller is compatible. Then pair it through the headset’s Bluetooth interface:
- Turn on the controller. Press the Xbox button.
- Make it discoverable. Hold the controller’s Pair/Connect button until the Xbox button flashes.
- Open Bluetooth pairing on Quest. In the headset’s settings, scan for nearby Bluetooth devices and select the Xbox controller when it appears. The exact menu wording can vary with Quest software. For Xbox Cloud Gaming, install the app from the Quest Store and follow its in-app controller-pairing tutorial, as described in Xbox’s Quest announcement.
- Test it in a game or app that supports gamepads. Try navigation or controls there; a Bluetooth connection alone does not guarantee input support.
Microsoft’s Bluetooth controller guidance identifies Bluetooth-capable controller families, including Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth model 1708 and Series S/X, Elite Series 2, and Adaptive Controller. That information corroborates Bluetooth capability; it is not a Quest certification list. Xbox also describes Bluetooth-capable Xbox One controllers and later families in its controller firmware update announcement. Do not assume an Xbox One controller has Bluetooth just because it is wireless.
Can I use an Xbox controller on Meta Quest 3?
Yes, if it is an Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth and the app you want to use accepts gamepad input. Xbox specifically announced Quest 3 support for Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controllers and directs users to the Xbox Cloud Gaming app’s setup tutorial. Meta’s developer documentation also describes Bluetooth gamepads as an input category on Meta VR devices, but that platform capability does not require every retail app to expose gamepad controls.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When comparing controllers, check the exact model or revision and Bluetooth support rather than relying on the “Xbox One” or “wireless” label. Also check gamepad support in the target app; compatibility can be app-specific.
Why is my Xbox controller connected but not working on Quest?
A successful Bluetooth pairing confirms a connection, not that an app accepts Xbox input. Microsoft’s guidance makes gamepad operation dependent on the particular game or app. Meta’s Unity input documentation describes Xbox input becoming active after a player provides input, but it is developer guidance—not a promise that every consumer app offers controller controls.

The app ignores every button
- Check the app or game’s documentation or settings for gamepad support. Some VR titles rely on motion controllers and may not accept a gamepad.
- Check Quest’s Gamepad Gaze setting. A Meta community support manager recommended disabling it when a connected gamepad’s buttons were not recognized. The reported path is Quick Settings > Settings > Devices > Gamepad; labels or placement may change in later software.
It works in one app but not another
This points to different app support or input mapping, rather than necessarily to a failed Bluetooth connection. Confirm the second app supports gamepads and check its own controller settings.
Buttons do something unexpected
After confirming the headset connection, look for the app’s controller mode or input-mapping options. There is no single button layout established for all Quest apps.

What if the controller does not appear, disconnects, or asks for a passkey?
The controller never appears in Quest’s Bluetooth list
- Verify Bluetooth support for the exact controller revision; not every Xbox One wireless controller has Bluetooth.
- Turn it on and hold Pair until the Xbox button flashes.
- If the controller is connected to another host, disconnect it there before trying again. This is a practical troubleshooting step, not a universal Quest-specific fix.
It disconnects or pairing asks for a passkey
- Remove or forget the saved controller entry on Quest, then try pairing again.
- Check for a controller firmware update using Microsoft’s controller guidance.
These are steps to try, not guaranteed fixes: available reports do not establish one universal Quest solution for reconnection or passkey problems. Firmware and behavior can differ by controller model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Xbox-controller compatibility on Quest does—and does not—mean
Meta’s developer materials describe Bluetooth gamepads as a supported input category, while Xbox’s Quest announcement names Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controllers for the Xbox Cloud Gaming use case. Neither establishes that every controller revision works or that every Quest game accepts gamepad input. Pairing is the headset-level connection; whether buttons control anything depends on the app’s implementation.

Meta’s Unity guidance explains that an Xbox controller can become active after user input and describes APIs developers can use to identify connected and active controllers. That information helps explain why support can vary between apps, but it is aimed at developers rather than a complete consumer compatibility list.
