AAA games can share an engine and still look and feel distinct because an engine is a toolset, not a finished creative identity. Each studio decides what the game should feel like, then builds its art direction, mechanics, world, and performance trade-offs around that goal.
Does using the same engine make games look alike?
No. An engine supplies systems and tools for building a game, but it does not dictate a single art style or gameplay loop. Teams can configure those tools, add plugins or custom technology, change source code, and tune performance for their specific game.
Avalanche Software, for example, moved from its proprietary engine to Unreal Engine for Hogwarts Legacy in part because of its editor, open-world, and rendering tools. Director of Software Engineering Jose Villeta also described using plugin and source-code access to support unique systems and optimization. Housemarque used Unreal Engine for Returnal, but also brought its Kaamos visual-effects technology into the project as a UE4 plugin and used Blueprints to prototype quickly. These are developer accounts, not independent engine comparisons: Avalanche on Hogwarts Legacy and Housemarque on Returnal.
How does art direction give a game its identity?
Art direction begins with the intended identity of the game—not with a preset level of technical realism. It guides choices such as palette, contrast, silhouette, lighting, and atmosphere, including how clearly players can read characters and spaces.

Hi-Fi RUSH: stylization by design
Tango Gameworks established Hi-Fi RUSH’s cel-shaded, clean look early. Game Director John Johanas said the team’s guiding words were “Colorful,” “Sharp,” and “Clean.” Lead Graphics Programmer Kosuke Tanaka explained that the team adapted modern lighting methods to serve that deliberately stylized, 2D-like visual expression. The result reflects a specific art goal, rather than a limit of the technology: Tango Gameworks on Hi-Fi RUSH.
Returnal: visuals tied to story
Housemarque Art Director Ville Kallio, identified in the studio interview as “Louden,” described the studio’s visuals and worldbuilding as growing from story and concept, with subtext and meaning helping drive the art direction. That is a different starting point from defining a style through a short list of visual keywords, even though both approaches give a project a coherent identity. Housemarque on Returnal.

Why do games built on different priorities feel different?
Game feel comes from what the player repeatedly does and how the game responds. The core loop influences controls, encounter design, level layout, timing, and even what visual information must be easy to read.
Returnal: arcade action in a larger production
Housemarque has described Returnal as carrying forward the studio’s arcade-action heritage into a larger third-person game. Business Developer and Marketing Director Mikael Haveri said that gameplay remained a central pillar. Production scale changed, but the studio’s stated design emphasis did not simply disappear with it. Housemarque on Returnal.

Ghostrunner: mobility and precision
For One More Level, keeping the player moving was central to Ghostrunner. Narrative Designer and Writer Jan Gąsior said, “The most important thing was to keep the player moving.” The studio described extensive tuning to balance smooth movement with precise control. It also watched how players behaved to adjust routes and options, aiming to make levels readable without removing freedom in encounters. In this case, traversal is not a layer added after the levels are made; it helps determine how those levels work. One More Level on Ghostrunner.
How does the game world reflect what developers want players to do?
World structure follows the experience a team wants to create. A game may funnel players through carefully paced encounters, make mobility the central challenge, or invite exploration through goals that connect across a broad world.

Avalanche described Hogwarts Legacy as moving beyond linear levels toward “multiple overlapping goals” linked through systems. For example, increasing inventory capacity involves completing trials that call for cultivated or purchased items and particular spells. Progress in one activity can therefore serve a player’s motivation elsewhere, instead of every objective being an isolated task. Avalanche on the open-world design of Hogwarts Legacy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do visual effects and detail vary between games?
Every game has finite hardware and production budgets. A developer must decide how to spend them across frame rate, image quality, effects, objects, lighting, and the number of systems running at once. Those decisions can change what players see, but the goal is not always to maximize detail: it is to support the intended experience within the available budget.

Frame rate can matter more than extra visual detail
Tango Gameworks said Hi-Fi RUSH prioritized a solid 60 FPS because it is a rhythm-action game; Johanas put it simply: “a solid 60 FPS takes priority over graphics.” That is the studio’s stated production priority for that game, not a rule for every title. Responsive timing can be more important to a game’s identity than adding another graphical feature. Tango Gameworks on Hi-Fi RUSH.
Density and performance can pull in different directions
The Coalition described targeting 60 FPS for Gears 5 while controlling effects and object density. Larger spaces made the trade-off harder: enough objects helped environments feel alive, but each addition had to be balanced against performance. The team also aimed to give each biome a distinct visual signature, so reducing or tuning content was a matter of managing both the technical budget and the scene’s character. The Coalition on Gears 5.
Advanced rendering features still involve art choices
Gearbox said maintaining the inked style of Borderlands 4 involved trade-offs with newer rendering options, including Lumen. Material and lighting tools helped the team control palette and tone. Newer rendering features do not automatically make a game’s visual identity stronger; developers still have to decide whether and how a feature serves the look they want. Gearbox on Borderlands 4.
How should you compare the look and feel of AAA games?
“Better graphics” is too blunt a measure to explain why one game looks or plays differently from another. A more useful comparison asks what each team is trying to achieve and how its choices support that goal.
- Art direction: Is the game realistic, cel-shaded, inked, or otherwise stylized? How do palette, contrast, silhouette, and atmosphere shape what is distinctive and readable?
- Gameplay pillar: Does play emphasize arcade skill, high-speed movement and precision, exploration, or another core activity?
- World structure: Are spaces arranged around linear encounters, open-world traversal, or freedom to approach challenges in different ways?
- Production approach: Which engine tools, plugins, custom systems, or iteration methods did the studio describe using?
- Performance trade-offs: Which elements—such as frame rate, effect density, object count, lighting, or resolution—are being prioritized or tuned?
These questions make the comparison more meaningful, but they do not turn developer interviews into a controlled test. The accounts above explain choices made during development; they are not current performance benchmarks. Platform, game version, and patches can affect how a title runs today.
