For a practical PC setup, connect a gamepad before launching Mupen64Plus, let its SDL input plugin detect it if possible, then map the pad’s controls to the Nintendo 64 stick, buttons and C-buttons. Choose a GoldenEye 007 control scheme that works with that mapping, and test movement, aiming, firing and menus before adjusting sensitivity. The layout below is a starting point, not a verified GoldenEye preset; exact menus and mapping steps differ in other emulators.
Which emulator instructions apply?
This walkthrough covers Mupen64Plus and its SDL input plugin, not every Nintendo 64 emulator. Mupen64Plus documentation describes the latest code and may include changes not in a released build; for a release, follow the README packaged with that build if it differs from the online instructions: Mupen64Plus core README. The reviewed documentation does not establish a current version recommendation or platform-specific download location, so obtain a build through the project’s official distribution channel and use its release-specific instructions.
RetroArch cores, front ends and Project64 input plugins can keep settings in different places. Do not apply Mupen64Plus configuration-file instructions to those systems.
Install and launch Mupen64Plus
- Install a Mupen64Plus build appropriate for your operating system, using the instructions shipped with that build where they differ from the latest-code documentation.
- Connect your gamepad before starting the emulator. SDL input can automatically configure recognized joysticks; if no supported joystick is available, Mupen64Plus documents keyboard input as a fallback.
- Launch the emulator with a game image path as the ROM argument. The documented command form is
mupen64plus [parameter(s)] rom. Parameters can select fullscreen and input, graphics, audio or RSP plugins; consult the documentation for your build for exact options.
This command-line form explains how to provide a game image to the emulator; it does not advise where to obtain one. Laws and authorized sources vary, so check the rules that apply where you live.

Map a gamepad for GoldenEye 007
Start with automatic detection
Mupen64Plus Input-SDL can configure recognized joysticks automatically. The plugin keeps settings for simulated controllers 1–4 in separate sections. Controller settings include the selected device, device name, whether the controller is plugged in, pak type, deadzone and button or axis bindings. Make sure the pad is assigned to controller 1 and that the simulated controller is marked plugged in. See the Input-SDL plugin documentation for the available controls and settings.
Try a reachable starting layout
The N64 controller has separate analog movement and four C-button directions. A modern two-stick pad can map its left stick to N64 analog movement and its right stick to the C-buttons, with face buttons assigned to A and B and a shoulder button or trigger assigned to Z. This is a reasonable arrangement to try for a first-person game, not a tested or guaranteed GoldenEye configuration. The plugin documentation also describes mapping a second analog stick to the C-buttons and notes that axes can be swapped to put analog movement on the other stick.

After mapping, open GoldenEye’s in-game control options and choose a scheme that uses the controls you assigned. The exact menu wording and an ideal scheme are not established here, so use the displayed options rather than looking for a specific label. Test movement, aiming, firing and menu navigation; adjust the mapping in the emulator or the game as needed before tuning sensitivity.
A PC USB gamepad is optional if you do not already have a usable controller. Check that your operating system recognizes any pad you choose; the Mupen64Plus documentation does not certify specific models.

Use the keyboard fallback
When no supported joystick is connected, Mupen64Plus documents these default SDL keyboard bindings:

Arrow-key analog movement normally simulates full stick deflection. Right Control reduces it by 50%, Right Shift by 25%, or both together by 75%. These defaults can be remapped in the configuration file, whose location varies by operating system and documentation version. They are fallback bindings, not a purpose-built GoldenEye keyboard layout.

Fix common controller problems
“No auto-configuration found for device”
Check the detected device name, then add or rename a section in InputAutoCfg.ini so its name matches the device. The controller troubleshooting documentation describes this manual configuration path: Input-SDL controller configuration. A nearby device section may serve as a template only when its binding syntax and physical controls match your pad; verify and adjust the button and axis numbers rather than assuming they are the same.
A stick moves the wrong way or does not respond
- Confirm the SDL device selection and that the gamepad is assigned to controller 1.
- Check the X and Y axis numbers and their positive or negative directions against the device’s actual input.
- Inspect the analog deadzone and peak settings. They control how input is interpreted; the documentation does not establish a universal value that suits every controller.
The Input-SDL troubleshooting instructions recommend joystick testing utilities to identify button, axis and hat numbers.

The D-pad does not behave like a hat switch
Some controllers expose D-pad directions as axes instead of a hat. In that case, use axis syntax in the mapping rather than hat() bindings, as explained in the controller configuration documentation.
Mouse input as an alternative
Mupen64Plus input configuration can map mouse motion to the N64 analog stick and mouse buttons to controller buttons. Enabling mouse input grabs and hides the pointer; Left Control + Left Alt is the documented toggle. This is an alternative input configuration, not a substitute for verifying your gamepad mapping.
