1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPlay Gothic 1 first, then Gothic II—especially if you are new to the series and want the story in order. The second game is a direct sequel: it follows the Nameless Hero after the magical barrier from the first game is broken, so starting at the beginning gives the sequel’s changed world and returning characters their context.
Why Gothic 1 comes first
Gothic introduces the Nameless Hero as a prisoner sent into the Valley of Mines, a colony enclosed by a magical barrier. The prisoners form competing factions inside that isolated world. Steam’s Gothic 1 Classic listing describes this premise and gives the original game’s release date as March 15, 2001.
Gothic II picks up after the barrier is broken. THQ Nordic describes the escape as throwing the surrounding region into disorder, making the sequel’s setting and stakes a consequence of the first game’s events. Playing the original first lets you experience that change in sequence rather than meeting its aftermath without context.
What changes in Gothic II
Gothic II is the sequel, not an alternate starting point in the same story. THQ Nordic called it “the award-winning sequel” in its November 29, 2023 announcement of the Nintendo Switch release. The publisher’s description connects the game directly to the Nameless Hero and the broken barrier.

Can you start with Gothic II?
You can begin with Gothic II if your priority is simply to sample the series, but it is not the recommended order for a first playthrough focused on the story. The available publisher descriptions establish it as a sequel whose premise follows the first game’s ending; they do not establish that it is a better first game or compare the two on combat, pacing, difficulty, or technical performance.
For the clearest narrative progression, start with Gothic 1—either the classic version or the remake—then continue with Gothic II. If you choose the sequel on PC, Gold Edition includes Night of the Raven; the Switch version named above is Complete Classic.
