What is the combat like?
Combat feel changes across the series, so it is more useful to consider each entry on its own than to treat the trilogy as one consistent system. The remake is the clearest choice if you want the modernized presentation: its official description says combat retains deliberate, tactical roots while being updated, and that faction alignment influences abilities and playstyle.

Gothic 3 documents both close-combat and ranged-combat systems in its manual. The available documentation does not establish a detailed mechanical comparison across all three classic games, so choosing among them on the basis of a precise trilogy-wide combat ranking would be misleading.
Are the quests and factions interesting?
Factions are more than a cosmetic label in the remake’s official description: players choose among three, and that choice influences ability development and how the adventure unfolds. The same description says the remake adds more detailed questlines and NPC routines and reactions. These features point to a setting where social choices and inhabitants matter, rather than a series of quests detached from the world.

For Gothic 3, the manual confirms that a quest log records essential mission details. That is useful evidence about tracking quests, but it does not prove that every quest throughout the trilogy works the same way or is equally compelling.
Is the world open?
The series changes its setting as it goes. The first two games take place on Khorinis; Gothic 3 moves to mainland Myrtana, which the manual divides into the central realm, the icy northern region of Nordmar, and the southern desert of Varant. The settings give the series room to shift from one local society to a broader range of regions.

The remake’s official listing describes the Valley of the Mines as an organic open world in which NPCs and wildlife follow routines independently of the player. That supports thinking of exploration as learning a place and its inhabitants, not simply clearing a map of checklist activities.
Should you play the original or the remake?
Choose based on whether you want the earlier game or a more modernized reworking. The remake’s Steam description presents it as an expanded version of the original, with updated combat, more detailed quests and NPC behavior, and added traversal abilities. The classics remain distinct releases rather than interchangeable versions of one experience.

Is the Gothic trilogy worth playing today?
It is worth considering if you value a strong sense of place, faction-driven progression, and exploration that rewards attention to local people and routines. Go in expecting older classics whose combat and presentation vary by entry; choose the remake if an updated version of the first game is more appealing. The publisher advertises the remake as offering “over 50 hours of gameplay”; treat that as its estimate, not an independently measured playtime.
