If you are buying an import, check the exact game and console model—and do not assume that a game disc’s compatibility guarantees its DLC will work.
Can I play an American PS3 game on a European PS3?
Usually, yes: most PS3 game discs work on consoles from other regions. GamesRadar’s July 2, 2026 guide describes the vast majority as region-free, while noting exceptions and caveats, including Persona 4: Arena and the online component of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle. Does the rule change for movies and older PlayStation discs?
Yes. PS3 game-disc compatibility does not tell you whether the console can play a movie or an older PlayStation game. Sony’s manuals list different region codes by model and market, so consult the manual matching the model number printed on your console.

Will DLC work with an imported PS3 game?
Not necessarily. Sony says an add-on cannot be used with a disc game when the country or region licenses do not match. Store content also varies by country or region, and you cannot change an account’s country or region after creating it. A region-compatible disc therefore does not guarantee that another territory’s DLC, voucher, or store content will work with it. Sony account country/region guidance
Can I still buy PS3 games from the PlayStation Store?
Availability is changing by market. In an announcement dated July 1, 2026, Sony said PS3 and PS Vita Store closures would begin in select markets during 2026 and become global in July 2027. Sony said previously purchased content would remain downloadable for the foreseeable future after closure. Why won’t a Blu-ray movie play on my PS3?
A failed playback attempt does not, on its own, show that the movie is region-locked. Work through these checks:

- Check the Blu-ray’s region mark against the region listed in the manual for your PS3’s exact model.
- Inspect the disc for damage or dirt.
- Update the PS3 system software. Sony says Blu-ray playback requires renewal of the player’s encryption key and recommends a system software update to renew it. Sony PS3 Blu-ray playback support
What to check before buying an imported PS3 game
- Confirm it is a PS3 game disc, not a Blu-ray movie, DVD, or PS1/PS2 game.
- Look up the exact game and edition for region or online-feature exceptions.
- If you need DLC, check that the add-on’s country/region license matches the disc game.
- For movies or backward-compatible older discs, find the console’s model number and use its matching Sony manual.
