The PS2 release is the original game, the PS3 edition is an HD remaster, and the PS4 edition is a ground-up remake. The PS4 version refreshes the presentation and offers optional updated controls, but Sony’s published descriptions do not establish a complete technical comparison across all three consoles.
How the three editions differ

That distinction matters: PS3 updates the earlier game for newer hardware, while PS4 is a remake rather than simply another remaster. Sony’s release-era PlayStation Blog coverage describes the project as a remake.
Visuals and performance
Sony describes the PS4 edition in broad terms: improved visuals and enhanced performance. Those descriptions establish the intent of the remake, but do not supply a like-for-like set of resolution or frame-rate figures for PS2, PS3 and PS4. A precise three-console technical ranking would go beyond the published details available here.
PS4 Pro mode
Sony’s release announcement said the PS4 Pro presentation option targeted dynamic 4K resolution at 30 fps. “Targeting” and the PS4 Pro qualification are important: this is not a specification for every PS4 model, nor a guarantee of a fixed resolution in every scene. The announcement does not provide comparable PS2 and PS3 figures.

Controls and gameplay
The PS4 remake includes optional updated controls, so players can choose an alternative to the classic control approach. Sony’s product descriptions do not enumerate every control difference, and the available official information does not support a detailed button-by-button comparison across the three editions.
There is one specifically reported PS3 gameplay side effect: Bluepoint senior producer Daryl Allison said that making the frame rate steadier made the third colossus more difficult. The explanation appears in a reposted interview excerpt, rather than a primary Sony specification. It is a narrow observation about that encounter, not evidence that the PS3 version as a whole plays incorrectly.

PS4 extras and choosing a version
The PS4 edition adds Photo Mode. Sony also announced a Special Edition at release; its listed physical extras included a Steelbook case, postcards, a printed manual, a world map and stickers, alongside digital extras such as themes and an avatar set. These are release-era edition details, not confirmation that the Special Edition is currently available to buy. Sony’s blog announcement records the features and contents.
- Choose PS2 if you want to play the original release.
- Choose PS3 if you want the HD remaster rather than the later remake.
- Choose PS4 if you want the rebuilt presentation, Photo Mode and optional updated controls; PS4 Pro owners also have the announced presentation/performance options.
For current access, check the relevant PlayStation storefront or a retailer for the edition and region you want. The cited Sony pages confirm the PS4 game, but do not establish current physical stock or Special Edition availability.
