Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by checking that the game, emulator core, file format, and—if it is a Sega CD game—BIOS setup match. This guide focuses on RetroArch with the Genesis Plus GX core; other emulators may use different menus and requirements. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which check affects the problem.
Before troubleshooting, identify your setup
Write down the emulator and core name and version, your operating system and hardware, the exact game or disc, what you expected to happen, what happened instead, and any relevant log messages. Those details help distinguish a compatibility problem from a configuration issue; Libretro’s RetroArch troubleshooting guide asks users to include them when requesting help.
A blank screen, for example, does not by itself show whether the cause is the game file, a core mismatch, a BIOS requirement, or video output. Check the relevant possibilities below before changing unrelated settings.
The game will not start or the screen stays blank
Check that the core supports the console
Genesis Plus GX supports Genesis/Mega Drive, Sega/Mega CD, Master System, Game Gear, SG-1000, and Pico software. It does not support 32X games. If you try to launch a 32X title in this core, choose a core that supports that system rather than treating the failure as a Genesis BIOS or graphics issue. See the Genesis Plus GX documentation for its supported systems.

Check the cartridge file and selected core
For a supported cartridge game, confirm RetroArch loaded Genesis Plus GX and that the file uses a supported extension. The core documentation lists formats including .bin, .gen, .md, and .smd. A file extension alone does not confirm that the file is intact or correctly identified, so check RetroArch’s log if the core still will not load it.
Use a BIOS only when that system requires one
Ordinary Genesis cartridge games do not require the optional Genesis startup ROM listed by Genesis Plus GX. Sega CD games do require a BIOS matching the game’s region. The core lists bios_CD_U.bin for US Sega CD games, bios_CD_E.bin for European Mega CD games, and bios_CD_J.bin for Japanese Mega CD games. Its listed Genesis startup ROM is bios_MD.bin, and is optional.

The core documentation says to place BIOS files in RetroArch’s system directory and enable the corresponding core option for boot ROM files. If the BIOS is not recognized, check the directory RetroArch is configured to use, the exact filename, region and version, file integrity, and log errors. Libretro’s BIOS guide explains the general setup; use the core documentation for its specific requirements.
BIOS files are copyrighted system software. Libretro states, “RetroArch and LibRetro do not share any copyrighted system files or game content.” Obtain and use BIOS and game files only in accordance with applicable local laws; do not rely on unauthorized download sites.

A Sega CD game fails to load or has missing audio tracks
Genesis Plus GX loads Sega CD content through a cue sheet that points to the disc image and tracks. Its documented combinations include ISO with WAV, BIN with CUE, and ISO with OGG; ISO with MP3 is not supported. Audio tracks for the described formats must be 16-bit stereo at 44100 Hz.
For a multi-track disc, inspect the cue sheet to make sure its filenames and track declarations match the files actually present. If a game spans multiple discs, the core documentation recommends making an .m3u text file that lists the disc .cue files, then loading that list in RetroArch. The documented method can also list CHD images when the content has been converted to CHD. To change discs while playing, use Quick Menu → Disk Control. These are Genesis Plus GX-specific instructions; other emulators may expect different layouts.

Audio crackles, stutters, or drifts out of sync
First check monitor timing and synchronization, rather than assuming the game file is faulty. Libretro says RetroArch’s Dynamic Rate Control synchronizes audio and video, and that an incorrect monitor refresh-rate configuration can cause stuttering or crackling. Its troubleshooting guide recommends checking that VSync is enabled and working, measuring or estimating the display’s refresh rate, and setting RetroArch’s video_refresh_rate to match. The guide says accuracy of roughly 0.1% is needed for Dynamic Rate Control; this is configuration guidance, not a measured failure rate.
PAL content on a 60 Hz display will not be perfectly synchronized, according to the same guide. Genesis Plus GX offers Auto, NTSC-U, PAL, and NTSC-J region choices; Auto uses information in the game ROM. If you change the region option, test the game again before adjusting other timing settings.

Performance is slow or the frame rate is low
Libretro’s RetroArch guide suggests checking whether the computer meets the selected core’s requirements and whether demanding core options are enabled. It also recommends testing potential bottlenecks one at a time:
- Turn shaders off.
- Lower the video scale.
- Try another video driver.
- Test threaded video.
- Test with VSync disabled.
- Turn Run-Ahead off.
These are diagnostic alternatives, not guaranteed fixes. Threaded video may increase latency and cannot provide perfectly smooth VSync, so judge the result by the symptom you are investigating rather than assuming that one setting is best for every setup.
The display is uneven or controls feel delayed
For uneven display in a window on Windows
Libretro documents OpenGL VSync problems in windowed mode on Windows Vista and later, and suggests trying the D3D driver for windowed use. This advice concerns RetroArch’s documented driver context; it should not be treated as a universal fix for other emulators or platforms.
For apparent input lag
Driver buffering can contribute to latency. Libretro describes OpenGL hard sync as a possible way to reduce it, while warning that it can sharply reduce performance if the computer lacks enough headroom. Test the change by itself and revert it if performance worsens.
The controller is not detected or buttons are wrong
- Confirm that your operating system recognizes the connected controller.
- In RetroArch, check the controller’s port assignment, device selection, and button mapping.
- In Genesis Plus GX, check the joypad type. The core supports automatic selection and explicit three-button or six-button Mega Drive/Genesis joypad types.
- Test again in the game. A mismatch between the selected device type and a game’s expected controls can make buttons seem missing or incorrectly mapped.
When to consider a different core
Switching cores makes sense when the selected core does not support the console, as with 32X in Genesis Plus GX, or when a specific compatibility issue remains after checking files and settings. No single alternative can be called universally best on the basis of the available documentation. Compare support for the exact console, Sega CD BIOS requirements, supported ROM and disc formats, availability on your platform, and the symptom you need to solve—such as timing, compatibility, or input mapping. Check the alternative core’s current documentation before moving your setup.
