On PS5, play the PS4 edition of Shadow of the Colossus through backward compatibility. On PS4, play that same 2018 remake. The PS3 has a separate earlier remaster; PS5 does not play PS3 discs. If you own a PS4 disc, you need a PS5 with a disc drive, and the disc must remain inserted while you play.

How to play the PS4 edition on PS5
Digital copy
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that owns the game.
- Open your game library, select Shadow of the Colossus, and download it.
- Install any required update and launch the game. Sony recommends keeping PS5 system software current; the Store listing notes the latest system software may be required. Store listing.
PS4 disc
- Confirm your PS5 has a disc drive. A PS4 disc cannot be used with PS5 Digital Edition.
- Insert the PS4 disc, select the game hub, and let the console install the game and any required update.
- Keep the disc inserted whenever you play; it serves as the license check.
Sony lists both DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 among controllers usable with supported PS4 games on PS5. Compatibility does not turn the PS4 release into a dedicated PS5 edition, and Sony warns that some PS4 features may be unavailable during PS5 play. Sony compatibility guidance.
How the PS3 remaster differs from the PS4 remake
The PS3 and PS4 releases are distinct versions, not simply two labels for the same port. Sony’s PlayStation Blog interview quoted Bluepoint Games president Marco Thrush explaining the PS4 project: “With Shadow of the Colossus we’re working on a remake — it’s not really a remaster. One, because we already did the remaster.” The earlier remaster was for PS3; the PS4 edition was rebuilt as a remake. Sony PlayStation Blog.
If you specifically want the PS3 version, use a PS3 and look for The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection. Current stock and availability can vary by region. If you want to play on PS5 or PS4, choose the PS4 edition instead.

PS4 Pro performance options
Sony’s 2017 PS4 Pro announcement described two options: Cinematic, emphasizing image quality with a 30 fps target, and Performance, targeting 60 fps. Those were historical targets announced for PS4 Pro, not a guarantee for every console, display, or PS5 setup. Sony PlayStation Blog.
