1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose first person if you want to experience the world from close to your character’s viewpoint; choose third person if seeing your character move through that world matters more. Neither camera guarantees better immersion, combat, or storytelling. The right fit depends on what you want to notice—and how well that particular RPG is designed around its camera.
What changes when you change perspective?
First person: closer to the character’s viewpoint
In first person, the camera sits at or near the avatar’s eyes. The character is usually not visible as a whole, so nearby objects and the immediate environment take up more of your attention. That can make exploration feel direct: you look at the world rather than at a character moving through it. Game Developer describes this as a tendency toward connection with the game world, not a guaranteed emotional effect. Game Developer’s discussion of perspective also considers how viewpoint affects design and storytelling.
Third person: your character stays in view
In third person, the camera shows some or all of the avatar from outside. You can watch movement, animations, outfit, and position relative to the environment. That visibility may strengthen a player’s connection to the character, but it does not automatically make a story more compelling or role-playing more meaningful. The view’s usefulness also depends on camera distance, angle, and how the game handles obstacles.
Which view is more immersive?
There is no universal winner. A University of York research database record for a 2015 study reports that participants were more immersed in gameplay in first person regardless of their stated perspective preference. That is a finding from one study, not proof that every player or RPG will feel more immersive in first person. The University of York study record is the source for that scoped result.

Immersion can mean feeling present in a space, identifying with a character, or becoming absorbed in the activity. First person may foreground the first kind; third person makes the avatar more visible. Your response depends on the game and what you mean by immersion.
How do the perspectives compare in play?
| What matters to you | First person may suit you if… | Third person may suit you if… |
|---|---|---|
| World detail | You want a close view of objects and spaces around the avatar. | You prefer to see the character in the environment as you explore. |
| Character and customization | Seeing the avatar’s full appearance is less important during play. | You want to watch the character’s outfit, animation, and movement. |
| Spatial awareness | You like focusing on what is directly in front of the character. | You value seeing the avatar’s position in relation to nearby space. |
| Combat and movement | You prefer the feel of the game’s first-person aiming or close-range actions. | You prefer the game’s third-person view of movement, attack range, or nearby threats. |
These are questions to test in a specific game, not guarantees about either camera. Camera placement, field of view, aiming, attack animations, and movement controls all affect how a view performs. Game Developer’s design discussion of first-person and third-person controls explains why camera and control choices are linked. A wider view can help you see more of the space, for example, but only if the game’s camera actually provides it.

Does camera preference predict what kind of RPG you’ll enjoy?
Not reliably. Quantic Foundry reports an association between preferring third-person games and scoring higher on Story motivation, with the relationship strongest among RPG players. That describes a pattern in player-motivation data; it does not show that a third-person camera causes someone to care more about story, or that first-person RPGs have weaker narratives. Quantic Foundry’s perspective analysis discusses the reported association.
Judge a game’s writing, quests, and role-playing choices on their own merits. Camera preference can help you predict the way you want to experience them, but it cannot tell you whether the story itself will appeal to you.

If an RPG offers both views, are they equally supported?
Not necessarily. A game can let you switch perspectives while tuning combat, animation, or exploration primarily for one of them. PC Gamer’s 2025 Avowed feature reports that the RPG offers both camera modes, prioritizes first person, and describes third person as an accessibility option. It is a concrete example of why a camera toggle should not be taken as evidence that both modes are equally polished or intended to play identically.
Before settling in, check the game’s current settings and try both views in the activities you expect to do most—exploration, combat, and traversal. Look for camera distance or sensitivity options, and notice whether switching changes aiming, visibility, or how clearly you can read attacks. Availability and behavior vary by game and platform; do not assume every RPG offers a switch.

A quick way to choose
- Pick first person if close environmental detail and acting from near the avatar’s viewpoint are your priorities.
- Pick third person if watching your character’s appearance, animation, and position is important to your enjoyment.
- Try both when available if you are unsure, but evaluate how each works in that game rather than assuming the options are equally tuned.
