Start by identifying whether the problem is low or uneven client FPS, delayed controls, or network instability: they can feel similar but need different fixes. Check your PC against Riot’s published requirements, then try reversible graphics and background-activity changes before considering hardware upgrades. None of these steps guarantees a particular FPS or latency improvement.
First, identify what is going wrong
FPS measures how many frames the PC renders; input latency is the delay from an input through the game and display. Network instability is a separate issue. Riot’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes client-FPS indicators from networking indicators, so check the in-game indicators and note what happens when the problem occurs before changing settings. A low or irregular FPS reading points toward rendering or frame pacing; networking indicators point toward connection trouble. Riot’s instability guide explains these categories.
Check whether your PC meets Riot’s requirements
Note your CPU, graphics processor (GPU), RAM, Windows version, and monitor refresh rate. Compare your CPU, GPU, and operating system with Riot’s currently published PC specifications. Riot associates its minimum, recommended, and high-end PC tiers with 30, 60, and 144 FPS, respectively. These are reference tiers, not guarantees for every PC, match, or configuration; the listed tiers alone cannot predict your result.
This check helps distinguish a settings problem from a hardware limit. If your PC is below the relevant CPU or GPU requirements, changing graphics settings may help, but it cannot make the machine equivalent to a higher tier.

Test graphics changes in a repeatable way
Lower graphics quality in VALORANT, then see whether performance becomes more consistent. Riot recommends lowering graphics quality when investigating instability and suggests trying selected visual effects off: Improve Clarity, Experimental Sharpening, Bloom, Distortion, and Cast Shadows. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes. Riot also notes that lowering quality may help older machines, while increasing settings may have little effect on FPS on newer machines; results depend on the system. - Change a few graphics settings at a time rather than changing everything at once.
- Compare performance in the same repeatable scenario, using the client-FPS indicators, so the comparison is meaningful.
- Keep changes that improve the issue you actually observed; restore changes that make no useful difference or reduce visibility.
Reduce unnecessary background activity
Recording tools, overlays, and other background tasks can consume resources. Riot’s optimization guidance recommends disabling recording or overlay features and unnecessary background activity. Close only what you do not need, then compare performance in the same scenario. The guide is older, so treat its general advice as a starting point rather than relying on dated vendor-control-panel recipes or assuming that every current menu path is unchanged.

Reduce input latency separately from FPS
If the game renders adequately but controls still feel delayed, look at latency-specific options rather than expecting graphics changes to solve everything. NVIDIA describes Reflex as coordinating game-engine work to reduce queued rendering work in supported games, including VALORANT. It is a latency feature, not an FPS booster; use it only where supported by your game and hardware. See NVIDIA’s explanation of Reflex.
Do not assume that buying a particular peripheral will fix input lag. The sources here do not establish a required peripheral or a universal latency fix. First determine whether the delay is in the game-and-display path or whether network instability is the actual symptom.

Choose between tuning and upgrading
Settings and background-activity changes are reversible and cost nothing, so they are the sensible first path. An upgrade is a separate decision: use Riot’s requirements to inform it, but do not choose a component until you know which part of your PC is limiting performance.

Riot’s minimum, recommended, and high-end tiers are useful reference points, not a promise that a specific upgrade will produce a fixed FPS. Without the PC’s component details and a diagnosis of the bottleneck, no single CPU or GPU can be named as the right purchase.
