Silence by itself cannot tell you why they stopped replying, and there is no evidence-based waiting period for this situation. If the silence comes with harassment, pressure, or a credible threat, treat that as a separate safety issue and use the steps below.
If there are no other warning signs, send one low-pressure message
You could write: “Hey, I noticed we haven’t played or talked lately. I hope you’re okay. No pressure to reply, but I’m here if you want to.” It shows care without demanding an explanation or making a reply feel owed. The CDC’s guidance on supportive conversations says that showing care can matter, while recognizing that you cannot control how another person responds. After that, give them room. Online status, read receipts, or seeing them in a game cannot establish why they have not answered. Avoid sending repeated messages or asking other players to contact them on your behalf; that can add pressure without resolving the uncertainty.
Decide what boundary works for you
It can hurt not to know where you stand. You do not have to wait indefinitely: decide privately how long you want to leave the door open, then put your attention into other games, friends, and activities. That is a boundary for your own well-being, not a punishment or proof that the friendship was never real. No universal waiting time or explanation for a gaming friend’s silence is established by the guidance available.

Keep ordinary silence separate from online-safety concerns
Do not assume a friend is unsafe simply because they stopped replying. At the same time, an online identity can be difficult to verify. The Australian eSafety Commissioner cautions: “It’s common to make new friends while gaming, but make sure you’re careful about how well you really know your ‘online friends’.” This is a general safety reminder, not evidence about any particular person. eSafety Commissioner: Gaming.
If you are being harassed or feel targeted
If the situation involves abuse, bullying, coercion, or unwanted contact, use the game or platform’s privacy and conversation controls, preserve relevant evidence, and report and block the account as appropriate. If someone makes a credible threat
If you believe your safety is threatened beyond the game, contact the appropriate local emergency or law-enforcement service. Steam Support gives this advice for threats outside Steam; use local services suited to your circumstances rather than assuming one platform’s process applies everywhere. If a younger player is unsure or concerned
A child or teen who feels uneasy should talk with a parent or another trusted adult. The FTC advises families to discuss what personal information not to share and when to stop playing and get an adult. Be especially thoughtful if an unknown player asks to move the conversation to another platform or requests personal details. FTC: Playing video games.
