A simultaneous release does not guarantee shared purchases, DLC, currency, or progress. Confirm each detail on the game’s official store listings and support FAQ.
Does one purchase cover both PC and console?
Check whether the PC and console editions are sold as separate products or whether the game explicitly includes dual entitlement. Do not assume that buying on one platform grants a copy on another. Even where cross-play or cross-progression is available, it does not by itself mean cross-buy.
For example, PlayStation Direct says PC and console versions of PlayStation Studios PC titles are different products. By contrast, Obsidian’s Grounded 2 FAQ identifies that game as an Xbox Play Anywhere title. Are cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-buy all supported?
Check these as separate features. Cross-play lets players on different platforms play together. Cross-progression carries progress between platform versions, while cross-buy means a purchase grants access on more than one platform. Shared saves do not establish that DLC or virtual currency is shared, either.

The differences can be specific to a game and even to a platform pairing. Arrowhead Player Support’s Helldivers 2 FAQ, updated September 29, 2026, says the game supports cross-play across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, but not cross-buy or cross-save/cross-progression. Linking Steam and PSN does not copy game data between copies; progression, DLC, and limited-time content do not transfer to another platform. Read the Helldivers 2 cross-progression FAQ.
Obsidian says Grounded 2 supports cross-platform play and saving between PC and Xbox. That named example should not be treated as a blanket promise for other Xbox games. For another platform-specific example, 2K’s Windows PC article for NBA 2K26, updated July 8, 2026, says Windows PC and Xbox are separate instances: progress and the VC wallet do not carry between them. Will your save, DLC, and currency carry over?
Look for an explicit answer about each item, not just a general statement that the game has cross-progression. Check whether the feature covers your exact platform pair and whether it applies to save files, account progression, purchased DLC, virtual currency, or limited-time content. PlayStation Direct says its PC and PS4/PS5 versions of PlayStation Studios PC titles currently do not transfer saves between platforms. PlayStation Direct PC Games FAQs.
Also confirm whether access to a save on another platform requires owning the game there. Ubisoft says its cross-play and cross-progression features require a Ubisoft account; accessing progression on another platform requires the linked account and ownership of the game on that platform, so a second purchase may be needed. Does your PC meet the requirements for the right edition?
Compare your hardware and operating system with the minimum and recommended requirements on the listing for the PC edition you intend to buy. Verify the storefront and launcher too: requirements or account steps may be presented on a specific store’s listing. Because no particular game is named here, there are no game-specific hardware thresholds to give.
Which accounts, subscriptions, or connection conditions apply?
Check the listing and support FAQ for required platform or publisher accounts, account linking, subscriptions, persistent internet connections, and mode-specific restrictions. A feature such as cross-play may have a separate account requirement from simply launching the game.

For instance, PlayStation Direct says a Steam account is needed to redeem direct PC purchases and that select titles require a PSN account. Ubisoft’s account requirements for cross-play and cross-progression are described above; they do not establish requirements for other publishers’ games. Read the policy for the store where you plan to buy, especially if you are pre-ordering or purchasing an early-access version. Terms differ by store. Valve’s Steam refund policy, last updated April 23, 2024, says: “The Steam refund offer, within two weeks of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime, applies to games and software applications on the Steam store.” For a pre-purchase that cannot be played until release, Steam’s 14-day period starts on release. For Early Access or Advance Access, playtime counts toward the two-hour limit. These are Steam terms, not a universal console or PC-store policy. Valve: Steam Refunds.

What platform-specific differences should you compare?
Use the game’s actual listings and credible testing to compare the details that matter to your setup and play style. Check included edition content and total price, PC requirements and target settings, supported controls, accessibility options, local and online play, and platform-specific features. For performance or visual-quality claims, look for evidence about the exact game and platform; platform availability alone does not establish a winner.
