If you mean a tabletop fantasy RPG with old-school design rather than a video game, start by deciding what you want to do most during play. For a classless, exploration-led approach, sample Cairn. For a familiar B/X-derived framework and access to older adventures designed for that rules tradition, sample Old-School Essentials (OSE). These are examples of different emphases, not a definitive ranking of retro fantasy games.
First, decide what you want the game to make important
Exploration, social problem-solving, combat, character advancement, and compatibility with existing adventures can all shape a campaign. D&D’s official rules group play into exploration, social interaction, and combat; those categories also make a useful first checklist when considering another fantasy RPG. See the 2014 Basic Rules and 2024 Basic Rules.
- Exploration and player decisions: Do you want the group to gather information, investigate the environment, and solve problems through choices made at the table?
- Character building: Do you enjoy selecting classes and options on a character sheet, or would you rather define a character through equipment and experiences?
- Combat and danger: Should fights be frequent and dependable, or should the group weigh whether a fight is worth the risk?
- Adventure compatibility: Do you want to draw on older B/X-era material with minimal conversion?
Answering these questions is more useful than choosing a game just because it is labelled “retro” or “OSR.” Those labels do not guarantee a single set of rules or a uniform table experience.
How Cairn and Old-School Essentials differ
The table summarizes what each game’s official materials emphasize. It is not a scorecard: it does not establish relative quality, complexity, or suitability for every group.

Choose based on the experience you want
Choose Cairn if exploration and improvisation appeal to you
Cairn’s official materials present a classless, exploration-led game in which equipment and experience help define a character. Its second-edition player guide puts the risk of violence plainly: “Fighting is a choice and rarely a wise one; consider whether violence is the best way to achieve your goals.” That is advice from the guide, not a claim that every table handles combat in exactly the same way. If your priority is reliably balanced, low-risk fights, ask the referee how danger works in their campaign before deciding.
The free first-edition SRD is a low-commitment way to see whether the rules suit you. It is licensed under CC-BY-SA 4.0 and available in multiple formats. Cairn’s second-edition player guide is useful for understanding its stated play principles; check which edition a group plans to use.

Choose Old-School Essentials if B/X lineage and adventure access matter
OSE describes itself as a light, modifiable classic fantasy framework. Its SRD says it is based on B/X and can use B/X-era material without conversion effort. The publisher’s description calls its rules “Simple, robust rules” that put the focus on shared imagination, improvisation, and fun; that is the game’s own characterization, not an independent assessment. If compatibility is a deciding factor, still check the particular adventure and the version your group intends to play.
OSE’s scope reaches beyond dungeons to wilderness, sea voyages, and strongholds. The online SRD lets you inspect the rules before buying a book.

Check the table’s expectations before committing
A ruleset alone does not tell you how a particular campaign will feel. Before joining or starting one, agree on the points that most affect your enjoyment:
- How dangerous character death is, and how the group handles a character who dies.
- Whether retreat is a normal option and how the referee adjudicates it.
- How much the group is expected to solve problems through questions, observation, and improvisation rather than character-sheet abilities.
- How much tactical detail you want in combat, and whether the referee’s approach matches that preference.
- How much preparation the referee expects to do and what materials they need.
This matters especially when a player is drawn to one game but the referee prefers another style. Cairn’s guide explicitly foregrounds agency, teamwork, exploration, caution, and danger; make sure those principles sound good to the group, not just to one player.

If you are buying, check which books the role requires
Necrotic Gnome says a player joining an OSE game needs the Player’s Book; running a game also requires the Referee’s Book. Its publisher page describes the Classic Fantasy Rules Tome as a one-volume format and lists a Classic Game Set as another format. The same page labels a 2026 printing “Coming Soon,” so check the current format and printing status before ordering: About Old-School Essentials.
If you are considering Cairn, start with its free first-edition SRD rather than assuming you need a paid edition to evaluate the rules. Confirm which edition the table uses before joining.

A quick decision path
- You want questions, exploration, and problem-solving through player decisions: read Cairn’s SRD and decide whether its classless approach and dangerous-combat guidance suit you.
- You want B/X-derived fantasy rules and a broad base of compatible older adventures: read the OSE SRD, then check the exact adventure and format your group plans to use.
- Your priority is tactical combat, extensive character options, or a particular setting: name that requirement first and compare the exact rules edition against it; the two examples here do not establish that either is the right fit.
- You will referee: check the referee-facing materials and preparation expectations, not just the player rules. For OSE, the publisher distinguishes the Player’s Book from the additional Referee’s Book.
