That limit is two minutes in the men’s Test and ODI conditions, and one minute 30 seconds in the men’s and women’s T20I conditions. The rules for the specific competition and match determine which limit applies.
How does timed out work?
After a wicket falls or a batter retires, the incoming batter must be ready to receive the ball within the applicable period. The conditions also allow the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball instead. The requirement applies unless Time has been called.
Readiness means more than entering the field or reaching the wicket. MCC says the batter must be in position for the bowler to be able to bowl. ICC’s T20I conditions also say the incoming batter is expected to start moving to the wicket immediately after a wicket falls.
If the requirement is not met, the incoming batter is out Timed out. The bowler is not credited with the wicket. In the current ICC Test conditions, if no batter comes to the wicket after an extended delay, the umpires are directed to the ICC match-referee procedure for awarding a match; expiry of the time limit marks the start of that procedure.

How much time does a batter have?
The current ICC playing conditions checked for these formats set different limits. The governing conditions for a specific event or match take precedence over a general format summary.

The ICC playing-conditions index lists the October 2026 editions of these documents. A competition may have its own conditions, so consult the rules that govern the match in question rather than assuming every international or domestic event uses the same limit. MCC’s Laws provide the underlying laws, but do not necessarily set the operative time for an ICC international.

Does equipment trouble stop the clock?
Equipment trouble does not automatically exempt a batter from the time limit. The rule is conditional on Time not having been called. MCC explains that if umpires are told within the allowance about a significant, justifiable equipment delay, they may treat it as a separate interruption and call Time so the issue can be resolved. That depends on what the umpires are told and decide; it is not an automatic pause.

On 6 November 2023, during the Cricket World Cup match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Bangladesh appealed after Angelo Mathews was not ready within that event’s two-minute period. Mathews said his helmet strap came off as he prepared to face his first ball. ICC reported that fourth official Adrian Holdstock said the time limit had already elapsed before the strap came off.

MCC’s account emphasizes that being on the field or at the wicket is not by itself enough: the batter must be ready for the bowler to deliver. It says the umpires found Mathews had not met the readiness requirement within the allowance and that Time had not been called before the appeal.
