If VALORANT started crashing or showing a black screen after you changed resolution or fullscreen settings, first restore the monitor’s Windows resolution to the option marked Recommended. Then restart the game and select a supported in-game resolution. If fullscreen still fails, test windowed mode before changing drivers or other system settings.
First, restore the Windows display resolution
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- If more than one monitor is connected, select the display VALORANT uses.
- Under Display resolution, choose the option marked Recommended.
- Restart VALORANT and check whether it launches normally.
Windows’ desktop resolution and VALORANT’s in-game resolution are separate settings. Microsoft’s instructions cover changing screen resolution and layout. A resolution below a display’s native resolution can look less sharp or appear small, centered, bordered, or stretched. Microsoft also notes that an unexpected resolution change may indicate a graphics driver needs updating. The instructions cover Windows 10 and 11; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
Choose a supported resolution in VALORANT
If the game opens, open its video settings and select a resolution supported by your display. Riot’s supported-resolution list includes common 16:9 options such as 1920×1080 and 2560×1440, along with other aspect ratios. The list is not exhaustive. Riot recommends 16:9 for the optimal experience, but that does not mean every other ratio is unsupported.
Riot warns that fullscreen issues may occur at some supported 5:4, 16:10, and 21:9 resolutions, and recommends windowed mode for those cases. If you are using one of those formats, windowed mode is a useful test—not proof that fullscreen is always the cause.

Test windowed mode if fullscreen fails
If VALORANT launches but goes black, freezes, or crashes when it enters fullscreen, switch to windowed mode if you can reach the video settings. Restart the game and check whether the problem changes. If you cannot reach the menu, restore the Windows resolution first and try launching again before pursuing other changes.
Lower video settings if the game opens
Riot’s general crash troubleshooting guide says reducing video options may help avoid crashes and suggests starting with low settings. This is general crash advice, not a display-specific fix.

- Set material, texture, detail, and UI quality to low.
- Turn off VSync, anti-aliasing, vignette, bloom, distortion, and first-person shadows.
- Set anisotropic filtering to 1x.
Where practical, change one option at a time and relaunch or reproduce the problem after each change. That makes it easier to identify whether a particular setting affects the crash.
Check the graphics driver and GPU overrides
Riot recommends keeping graphics drivers current because updates can include bug fixes and optimizations. It also notes that NVIDIA Control Panel and AMD graphics software profiles can override game settings; restoring those profiles to defaults can give VALORANT control of its own settings again. Treat these as troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes.

- Press Win+R, enter
dxdiag, and press Enter. - Open the Display tab to identify the graphics adapter.
- Use the driver route from the adapter’s manufacturer to check for an appropriate current driver.
- If you have changed per-game or global graphics settings in NVIDIA or AMD software, restore those settings to defaults and test VALORANT again.
A third-party driver updater is not required for these steps.
If the crash happens after Alt+Tab
Use this branch only if freezing, stuttering, or unusual behavior occurs when switching between VALORANT and the desktop. Riot’s separate Alt+Tab troubleshooting guidance suggests changing Windows Alt+Tab to show only open windows and testing the game’s disable-fullscreen-optimizations compatibility option. These steps target switching-related behavior; they are not default fixes for every crash after a display change.

When to contact Riot Support
If the crash continues, use Riot’s crash guide to check the game’s minimum requirements and contact Riot Support with details that help distinguish a launch problem from a fullscreen or switching problem.
- The exact display setting you changed and when the crash began.
- Whether VALORANT crashes at launch, when entering fullscreen, or only after Alt+Tab.
- Your Windows version, monitor model and resolution, graphics adapter, and driver version.
- Any error message or other visible symptom.
A crash that follows a display change does not by itself identify the cause. Do not assume that deleting configuration files, reinstalling the game, or buying hardware will solve it without further diagnosis.
