Proton lets many Windows games run on Steam Deck’s Linux-based SteamOS, but it cannot guarantee that every game or its supporting software will work perfectly. A crash tells you what happened, not which layer caused it. Start with reversible software checks, then test Proton settings for the affected game rather than assuming one version is a universal fix.
How Proton works on Steam Deck
Steam Deck runs SteamOS, which is based on Linux. Proton is a compatibility tool in the Steam Client that lets Windows-targeted games run on Linux. Valve describes it as using Wine alongside additional components, including high-performance graphics API implementations. It is not a virtual machine, and games do not all take an identical path through it.
In practical terms, Proton provides compatibility behavior and graphics translations that a game designed for Windows may expect. Many games can therefore run without a separate Linux version, but compatibility still depends on the individual game and its supporting components. Valve’s developer documentation identifies middleware and anti-cheat compatibility as areas developers may need to address; a game launching successfully does not establish that every component will work in every situation.
Valve’s Proton repository describes Proton as a Steam Client tool for running Windows-exclusive games on Linux. Its Steamworks documentation provides further information for developers.

Why a Steam Deck game may crash
There is no single cause that explains every crash. The problem may relate to a particular game’s Proton compatibility, middleware or anti-cheat, a game update, SteamOS or Steam Client software, third-party applications, or graphics and performance settings. These are areas to investigate, not a diagnosis of an unnamed title.
First work out whether the problem appears limited to one game. If several games crash or the Deck itself seems unstable, prioritize updating and restarting SteamOS and temporarily closing Desktop Mode applications. If one title is affected, check its compatibility details and try a controlled, reversible per-game Proton change.

What Steam Deck Verified means
Valve uses four compatibility categories. They describe its review of how a game works on Deck, not a general performance score or a promise that the game can never crash.
| Category | What Valve says it means |
|---|---|
| Verified | Works great by default on Deck without extra modification. |
| Playable | Works, but may require user configuration, such as changing controls or using a mouse or touchscreen to navigate a launcher. |
| Unsupported | Valve currently does not consider the game playable on Deck. |
| Unknown | Valve has not tested the game and has no compatibility information. |
For a Playable or Unsupported game, the Store page’s Deck Compatibility section identifies requirements that are not met. Compatibility details can change as games, SteamOS, and the Deck evolve, so check the current listing rather than treating a label as permanent. Valve explains the categories in its Steam Deck Verified program.

- Install updates and restart. On the Deck, open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates, install available updates, then restart the device.
- Temporarily close third-party applications. Exit or disable applications installed through Desktop Mode, then retest the game. If the crashes also affect other games or the system, keep the focus on system-level checks rather than changing several settings for one title.
- Check the game’s compatibility details. Review its Deck category and the unmet requirements shown on the Store page. Unknown means Valve has not tested the game; it does not mean the game is confirmed broken.
- Try a Proton version for that game. In the Library, highlight the game and open Menu > Properties > Compatibility. Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then try the latest Proton version offered through Steam. Valve notes that if only the Linux build is installed, forcing this option may cause Steam to download the Windows version.
- Retest before changing anything else. Compare what happens with the forced version against the game’s default setting. If the symptoms do not improve, restore the default or look for current, title-specific compatibility information before trying another change. Valve’s guidance recommends trying the latest Proton version, but does not promise that it will fix every game.
- Reduce graphics settings if the game still fails. Try a lower preset or adjust individual graphics settings, then retest.
- Contact support if the issue persists. Follow Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide to reach support or report a bug. The guide also says users with persistent instability after updates and a restart may opt into the Steam Deck Beta to see whether Valve has shipped a relevant change; beta enrollment is not a guaranteed fix.
What not to assume or try first
- Do not assume a particular Proton version is best for every game. The useful comparison is the game’s default setting versus a forced per-game setting, followed by a controlled retest.
- Do not blame anti-cheat without game-specific evidence. Compatibility can depend on middleware, but that does not make anti-cheat the established cause of every crash.
- Do not start with a community Proton fork. Valve’s Proton repository describes the official tool, and the first-line support guidance focuses on updates, restarts, compatibility checks, and per-game settings.
- Do not treat one game crash as a reason to reset or re-image SteamOS or open the hardware. Valve’s cited first steps are software checks; destructive recovery and hardware work are not established general fixes for a single-title crash.
- Do not buy storage, a dock, or replacement parts as a general Proton fix. A purchase is not part of Valve’s first-line crash guidance.
