In Farthest Frontier, use nearby foraging, hunting, and fishing to bridge the early settlement, start fields before those sources fall short, and add housing only when the food supply and delivery workforce can support more residents. There is no reliable fixed number of fields per villager: use the Resource Summary, field information, and food spoilage details in your own town to guide each expansion.
Start with the food your map can provide
At the start, wild resources can feed the settlement while you reserve labor for construction, deliveries, and clearing land. The official Farthest Frontier food guide identifies foraging, hunting, and fishing as early food routes. Assign work areas where the resources actually are; a gathering or fishing post cannot compensate for a poor location.
- Foraging: Foragers collect edible wild plants and berries. It is a useful bridge, but the official resources guide describes it as labor-intensive and inefficient.
- Hunting: Hunters provide meat and useful by-products such as hides and tallow. They need weapons and arrows, and a herd can support only so many hunters. Overhunting may deplete or displace game.
- Fishing: Use it where accessible water contains fish. Work areas must cover usable water; stocks can be depleted, then recover over time.
These sources are map-dependent, not limitless. Check whether game or fish remain available rather than assigning more workers to a source that is already struggling.
Build fields before food becomes scarce
Farming is a planned investment, not an instant emergency fix. Fields need to be cleared and tilled, and difficult terrain can take years to prepare. Winter freezing halts field work, so waiting until the pantry is low can leave too little time to establish dependable harvests. The official farming guide recommends checking fertility and soil information when placing a field.

Match field size to available labor
Fields can range from 5×5 to 12×12 tiles. The farming guide says a 12×12 field may require up to seven workers for efficient operation. Bigger fields can produce more, but they also need more labor for field work and harvest; size fields according to the workers you can spare rather than assuming the largest plot is automatically best.
Keep laborers available for deliveries, gathering, and site clearing as well as farm jobs. If all workers are assigned to specialized roles, production chains can stall because goods still have to be moved.

Rotate crops and stagger harvests
The field interface supports a repeating three-year crop rotation. Crops affect fertility and weeds differently, and field fertility, weeds, rocks, and soil mix all influence yields. Rotate crops instead of repeatedly planting nutrient-draining choices; schedule maintenance to clear weeds and rocks, and apply compost when available.
Plan harvest windows across fields. If several crops ripen together, you need enough farmers at that moment to gather them before they rot. Clover does not require harvesting and can help stagger labor demand. Use the field UI to judge conditions rather than assuming a rotation that works on one plot will suit every field.

Choose expansion foods for the town you have
Once the settlement has the labor and supply chains to support them, livestock, orchards, and grain processing can diversify its food supply. Each has prerequisites and a delay; none is a quick substitute for food that is already running out.
| Option | Useful when | Constraints and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Foraging | Wild plants are nearby and the settlement needs an early food bridge. | Labor-intensive and inefficient, according to the official resources guide. |
| Hunting | Game is available; the town can also use hides or tallow. | Herds support limited hunting; overhunting can deplete or displace game. Hunters need weapons and arrows. Official resources guide. |
| Fishing | Accessible water and fish resources are available. | Work areas must cover usable water. Stocks can be depleted but recover. Official resources guide. |
| Crop fields | The town can invest labor in scalable, long-term production. | Clearing, tilling, staffing, fertility, rotation, and harvest timing all matter. Official farming guide. |
| Livestock | The settlement can provide animal buildings, feed, and ongoing labor. | Cows and goats need barns; chickens need coops. Animals need feed, including winter feed. Outputs can include milk, eggs, meat, hides, tallow, and compost. Official food guide. |
| Orchards | The town can plan several years ahead and wants fruit variety. | Apple, peach, and pear trees take years to grow and need care. Official food guide. |
| Grain and bread | The settlement can support farming and processing infrastructure. | Grain stores well when dried but must be milled into flour and baked to become bread. Windmills need heavy tools, which a young town may have to obtain through trade; bread keeps for less time than grain or flour. Official food guide. |
Compare each investment by how soon it yields usable food, its labor needs, fit with your map, storage life, loss risks, and required buildings or inputs. The official guides do not establish a universal number of fields that will feed a given population.

Protect food after it is produced
A strong harvest does not guarantee a lasting supply: all food spoils, and spoilage varies by food type, processing, and storage. The official buildings guide and food guidance describe several ways to preserve suitable foods:
- Use root cellars for food rather than relying only on general storehouses; root cellars preserve it better.
- Barrels reduce spoilage by 5% each. A root cellar can hold up to ten barrels, while storehouses and markets hold up to five.
- Smoking meat and fish, jarring suitable berries, fruit, and root vegetables, and turning milk into cheese can extend shelf life.
- Locate storage near producers and consumers where practical. Goods move physically, so long hauling distances reduce productivity.
Check the Resource Summary to see what the town has and inspect individual food information for spoilage. A single arbitrary stock target cannot account for your production, consumption, storage, or current conditions.

Expand housing only when supply can support it
More residents can provide more workers, but they also increase demand for food and supplies. The official population guide says immigration depends on available housing and food, and warns: “Immigrants will not come to a town that cannot sustain them!” Births require healthy, happy villagers and ample housing.
Before adding housing, check whether current food stocks and expected harvests can support more residents, and whether enough workers remain for production and deliveries. Keep population growth in step with food capacity rather than treating housing as an independent expansion target. No fixed food-per-resident rate or guaranteed field layout is established by the guides; map, difficulty, game version, labor, crop conditions, storage, and spoilage all affect the result.
